6. Characterization of xenobiotic metabolism in the feral teleost northern pike (Esox lucius)
Sammanfattning : A basic characterization of xenobiotic metabolism in the feral teleost Northern pike has been performed. The different aspects of concern have been:a) investigation of the uptake and distribution to different body compartments of the carcinogen and environmental pollutant benzo(a)pyrene using whole-body autoradiography and scintillation counting. 7. Fish foraging under visual constraints
Sammanfattning : Visual conditions are changing in several different ways. Some lakes are getting turbid due to eutrophication or erosion while others are getting browner due to brownification. These two types of visual degradation results in completely different optical properties of lakes. LÄS MER
8. Phenotypic plasticity and the evolution of an inducible morphological defence in crucian carp
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I have investigated factors (cues, benefits, and costs) affecting the evolution of an inducible morphological defence in crucian carp (Carassius carassius). Inducible defences are favoured over permanent defences when prey have reliable cues to detect predators, when defences are effective but costly, and when predation pressure is variable and unpredictable, but sometimes strong. 9. Assessing and monitoring genetic patterns for conservation purposes with special emphasis on Scandinavia
Sammanfattning : Genetic variation is essential for biological evolution, for maintaining viability of populations, and to ensure ecosystem resilience. Increased human exploitation and environmental change result in rapid loss of biological variation, including genetic diversity. LÄS MER
10. Local adaptation in life history traits and population size estimation of aquatic organisms
Sammanfattning : Human society is dependent on healthy aquatic ecosystems for our basic needs and well-being. Therefore, knowledge about how organisms respond and interact with their environments is pivotal. LÄS MER
