  1. 1. Prognostic factors in renal cell carcinoma : evaluation of erythropoietin and its receptor, carbonic anhydrase IX, parathyroid hormone-related protein and osteopontin

    Författare :Karin Papworth; Torgny Rasmuson; Börje Ljungberg; Kjell Grankvist; Sten Nilsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Renal cell carcinoma; EPO; EPO-R; CA IX; PTHrP; OPN; prognosis; Oncology; Onkologi; onkologi; Oncology;

    Sammanfattning : A prognostic factor is a marker or a feature that can be used to estimate the risk of recurrence of disease, metastatic spread and clinical outcome. Despite intensive search for more sophisticated markers in renal cell carcinoma (RCC), few have added prognostic information to earlier described factors like stage of disease, nuclear grade, tumour type, and in metastatic disease; performance status, anaemia, hypercalcaemia and increased erythrocyte sedimentation. 2. 2. Translational Aspects of Erythropoietin Receptor and Hypoxia-Inducible Factors in Breast Cancer

    Författare :Anna-Maria Larsson; Institutionen för translationell medicin; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Breast Cancer; Anemia; Hypoxia; Erythropoietin EPO ; EPO receptor EPOR ; Estrogen Receptor ER ; Hypoxia-Inducible Factors HIFs ; Tamoxifen Response; Proliferation;

    Sammanfattning : The main function of erythropoietin (EPO) is in hematopoiesis where EPO stimulates increased proliferation, survival and differentiation of erythrocytic precursors in response to hypoxia. The EPO effect is mediated via binding to the EPO receptor (EPOR), which induces activation of different intracellular signaling pathways. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Erythropoiesis in anemia of rencl failure and malignancy : Studies on erythropoietin, iron, and transferrin receptor : by Soheir Beshara

    Författare :Soheir Beshara; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Medical sciences; erythropoiesis; anemia; renal transplantation; prostatic adenocarcinoma; erythropoietin; transferrin receptor; hemorheology positron emission tomography; iron hydroxide sucrose; pharmacokinetics; iron deficiency; 52Fe; 59Fe; red cell utilization; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Internal Medicine; invärtesmedicin;

    Sammanfattning : Erythropoietin (Epo) and iron are essential requirements for erythropoiesis. Serum transferrin receptor (S-TfR) is a marker of total erythropoiesis and tissue iron availability. In patients with renal insufficiency, successful renal transplantation leads to correction of anemia and improvement in erythropoiesis. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Apoptosis-related mechanisms in the immature brain after hypoxia-ischemia

    Författare :Xiaoyang Wang; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :hypoxia-ischemia; neonatal; caspase; ERK; XIAP; EPO; asialoEPO; brain;

    Sammanfattning : Aims: To characterize the activation of caspases-3 and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) in the neonatal brain after hypoxia-ischemia (HI) injury and evaluate the neuroprotective effect of X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis (XIAP) protein, erythropoietin (EPO) and the non-erythropoietic derivative asialoEPO. Methods: Seven-day-old rats or 9-day-old mice were subjected to HI. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Clinical and experimental studies in Philadelphia chromosome negative chronic myeloproliferative disorders

    Författare :Peter Johansson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :myeloproliferative disorders; polycythaemia vera; essential thrombocythaemia; epidemiology; erythropoietin; red-cell mass; spleen size; thrombo-embolic; PRV-1.;

    Sammanfattning : The present thesis deals with various aspects on the (a) epidemiology, (b) diagnosis, and (c) molecular biology in Philadelphia chromosome negative (Ph-) chronic myeloproliferative disorders (MPD). First, the incidence of the three Ph- MPD, polycythaemia vera (PV), essential thrombocythaemia (ET) and idiopathic myelofibrosis (IMF) was investigated in the city of Göteborg, Sweden during the years 1983-1999 (Paper I).
