2. Gene therapy for epilepsy: resculpturing synaptic transmission with neuropeptides
Sammanfattning : Intractable seizures and lack of effective antiepileptic drugs (AED) are severe and common conditions affecting many patients with epilepsy. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop new therapies in epilepsy. The search for novel treatments has identified several neuropeptide systems as potential targets for future therapeutic interventions. LÄS MER
3. Role of Endogenous BDNF and NT3 for Synaptic Transmission and Plasticity in the Dentate gyrus
Sammanfattning : The neurotrophins, notably brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and neurotrophin 3 (NT3), modulate synaptic transmission and synaptic plasticity in the adult mammalian brain. Recent data suggest that neurotrophins might be mediators of activity-dependent synaptic plasticity. LÄS MER
4. Mechanisms of Hyperexcitability in the Kindling Model of Epilepsy
Sammanfattning : Epilepsy is a syndrome characterized by recurring attacks of sudden, excessive and synchronous discharge in populations of cerebral neurons. Kindling is an animal model for complex partial epilepsy, and is particularly useful for studies on the development of the abnormal excitability underlying the generation and spread of epileptic seizures. 5. Gene therapy in epilepsy: neuropeptides and neurotrophic factors
Sammanfattning : Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is the most common form of epilepsy among adult patients, and the most problematic one as seizures cannot be controlled by currently available drugs in 30 % of patients. Gene therapy based on overexpression of endogenous anti-epileptic agents such as the neuropeptide galanin and the glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) represents a promising new approach for treatment of TLE.
