  1. 1. Lake sediment as environmental archive : natural and anthropogenic influence on the chronology of trace elements

    Författare :Evastina Grahn; Stefan Karlsson; Anders Düker; Bo Bergbäck; Örebro universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; lake sediment; environmental pollution; trace elements; chronology; diagenesis; Ag; Be; Ga; In; Pb; Sb; Tl; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi; Enviromental Science; Miljövetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : The focus of this thesis is the historical pollution of some seldom-monitored trace elements (SMTEs; Ag, Be, Ga, In, Sb and Tl) that have been involuntarily released for several thousands of years but whose usage have increased during the industrial era. Sediment cores from four rural lakes in a south to north transect in central Sweden, and two urban lakes have been used as environmental archives for chronological studies. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Groundwater resources in hard rock coastal terrains : Insights into heterogeneity and spatial variability

    Författare :Robert Earon; Bo Olofsson; Okke Batelaan; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Crystalline Rock; Groundwater Balance; Kinematic porosity; Groundwater Recharge; Water Security; Coastal Aquifer; Land and Water Resources Engineering; Mark- och vattenteknik;

    Sammanfattning : Challenges regarding water security in hard rock coastal regions with limited soil cover are: a seasonal absence of recharge during times of peak residency, heterogeneity and variability of the fracture network, close proximity to saline water sources and spatially inconsistent storage and extraction. In areas where it is not feasible to connect residents to municipal water systems, a better understanding of the resilience of reservoirs is needed. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Environmental Assessments of Landscape Changes : Interdisciplinary studies in rural Tanzania

    Författare :Louise Simonsson; Lennart Strömquist; Annika Dahlberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Geography; Environmental assessment; interdisciplinary methodology; landscape; perceptions; preferences; land; forest; miombo woodlands; resources; biodiversity; Tanzania; Geografi; Other earth sciences; Övrig geovetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis aims to show how biogeophysical and social processes are interlinked in landscape change, and to propose approaches for interdisciplinary environmental assessments (such as EIAs), concentrating on developing countries’ situations, and representation of findings from such studies. Landscape in its holistic sense is a very good concept and basis for intellectual and practical use in environmental dialogues. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Incorporation and preservation of geochemical fingerprints in peat archives

    Författare :Sophia V. Hansson; Richard Bindler; Dominik Weiss; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Peat; Beryllium; bulk density; C N-ratio; decomposition; deposition; downwash; elemental mobility; geochemistry; humification; lead; light transmission; mercury; peat accumulation; precipitation; Environmental Science; miljövetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : The present status of the environment, including environmental problems such as heavy metal accumulation in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, is in part the consequence of long-term changes. Cores from peatlands and other natural archives provide us with the potential to study aspects of the atmospheric cycling of elements, such as metal pollutants, on timescales much longer than the decade or two available to us with atmospheric deposition monitoring programs. 5. 5. Intramolecular isotope analysis reveals plant ecophysiological signals covering multiple timescales

    Författare :Thomas Wieloch; Jürgen Schleucher; Mats Nilsson; Gerd Gleixner; Lisa Wingate; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NMR spectroscopy; tree ring; isotope ratio; isotope effect; intramolecular 13C 12C signal; carbon allocation; acclimation; plant performance; climate reconstruction; plant ecophysiology;

    Sammanfattning : Our societies' wellbeing relies on stable and healthy environments. However, our current lifestyles, growth-oriented economic policies and the population explosion are leading to potentially catastrophic degradation of ecosystems and progressive disruption of food chains.
