  1. 16. Travel – a risk factor for disease and spread of antibiotic resistance

    Författare :Martin Angelin; Helena Palmgren; Birgitta Evengård; Anders Johansson; Anu Kantele; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Accident Prevention; Alcohol Drinking; Anti-Bacterial Agents; Antimalarials; Beta-Lactamases; Drug-Resistance; Bacterial; Enterobacteriaceae; Health Knowledge; Attitudes; Practice; High-Throughput Nucleotide Sequencing; Medication Adherence; Metagenome; Metagenomics; Patient Compliance; Proteobacteria; Risk Reduction Behaviour; Risk-Taking; Safe Sex; Travel medicine; Travel; Vaccination; Infectious Diseases; infektionssjukdomar; mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Sammanfattning : As international travel is rapidly increasing, more people are being exposed to potentially more antibiotic resistant bacteria, a changed infectious disease epidemiology, and an increased risk of accidents and crime. Research-based advice is needed to adequately inform travellers about these risks. LÄS MER

  2. 17. Attenuation of Oxidative Stress, Inflammation and Colorectal Oncogenesis by Food Constituents: Ischaemia/Reperfusion Injury and Induced Colitis in Rodents

    Författare :Åsa Håkansson; Avdelningen för livsmedel och läkemedel; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Colorectal cancer; Ischaemia Reperfusion; Rose hips; Colitis; Probiotics; Inflammation; Blueberry;

    Sammanfattning : The enteric microbiota is increasingly implicated as a central factor in the development of intestinal inflammation in humans and experimental animals, and the intestinal environment is considered important in both colorectal cancer development and modulation of mucosal immunity. Diet-induced changes in the different populations of the intestinal microbiota can be achieved by use of probiotic bacteria, dietary fibre and berries rich in phenolic compounds. LÄS MER

  3. 18. The faecal flora : a source of healthcare-associated infections and antibiotic resistance

    Författare :Annika Samuelsson; Håkan Hanberger; Barbro Isaksson; Jon Jonasson; Bo Söderquist; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Healthcare-associated infections (HAI) are important causes of mortality and morbidity, and antibiotic treatment is often necessary. Development and availability of new antibiotics are closely followed by development of resistance among microorganisms. During antibiotic therapy, a fraction of the antibiotic given is found in the gut. LÄS MER

  4. 19. Development and Stability of Antibiotic Resistance

    Författare :Maria Sjölund; Lars Engstrand; Dan Andersson; Pentti Huovinen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Microbiology; antibiotic resistance; selection; mutation frequency; biological cost of resistance; compensatory evolution; Helicobacter pylori; normal microbiota; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology; immunology; infectious diseases; Mikrobiologi; immunologi; infektionssjukdomar;

    Sammanfattning : Antibiotic resistance is of current concern. Bacteria have become increasingly resistant to commonly used antibiotics and we are facing a growing resistance problem. The present thesis was aimed at studying the impact of antibiotic treatment on pathogenic bacteria as well as on the normal human microbiota, with focus on resistance development. LÄS MER

  5. 20. Effects of Probiotics and Plant Components on Murine Experimental Colitis and Acute Liver Failure

    Författare :Nadia Osman; Livsmedelsteknik; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; mykologi; virologi; bakteriologi; Mikrobiologi; mycology; bacteriology; virology; Rose hip; Microbiology; Probiotics; Prebiotics; Liver injury; Blueberry; Gastro-enterology; Colitis; Gastroenterologi; Food and drink technology; Livsmedelsteknik;

    Sammanfattning : Acute liver failure is accompanied by a high rate of bacterial septic complications. High portal level of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) can lead to a pronounced secretion by Kupffer cells of pro-inflammatory mediators which have been shown to be early and important mediators of liver injury.
