1. A Glial Role in the Action of Electroconvulsive Therapy
Sammanfattning : The aim of the current thesis was to investigate glial responses to electroconvulsive seizures (ECS), an animal model of the fast-acting antidepressant treatment electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Depression, a common and devastating disorder, has in recent years been associated with volumetric changes in prefrontal cortex, hippocampus and amygdala, brain regions known to be implicated in emotional behavior. 2. Modulation of angiogenesis in adult rat brain - effect of aging, stress, environmental enrichment and antidepressant treatment
Sammanfattning : Neurogenesis and angiogenesis are stimulated by a number of antidepressant treatments, and cellular plasticity has emerged as a phenomenon with great relevance to the etiology and treatment of depression. In paper I we characterize how ECS-induced endothelial cell proliferation leads to vascularization of the adult rat hippocampus. LÄS MER
3. Neurogenic and angiogenic actions of electroconvulsive seizures in adult rat brain
Sammanfattning : In the current thesis, the neurogenic and angiogenic response to electroconvulsive seizure (ECS)-treatment was investigated in the adult rat brain. ECS-treatment is an animal model for the antidepressant treatment electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), which is considered to be the most effective antidepressant treatment modality today, however with not yet fully understood modes of action. 4. Characterization of habenular neurocircuitry. A potential novel target for treating depression
Sammanfattning : In the last decade, there has been an explosion of interest within the psychiatric research community in a small diencephalic brain region called the habenula. It has been uncovered as a key regulator of monoaminergic transmission, playing a fundamental role in decision making, behavioral flexibility, inhibitory control, sleep, pain and analgesia. LÄS MER
5. Lithium and brain plasticity - studies on glial cell changes and electroconvulsive treatment-induced amnesia in rats
Sammanfattning : Depression and bipolar disorder, collectively known as mood disorders, are devastating, common and often chronic illnesses. Imaging studies of patients with mood disorders have demonstrated structural changes in several brain regions implicated in mood regulation. LÄS MER
