The study is based on 20 hours of video recordings from 20 lessons in an English as a Foreign Language classroom (EFL) in grades 8 and 9 of an international compulsory school in Sweden between the years 2007 and 2010.     Sammanfattning : The English syllabus at the upper secondary level in Sweden stipulates that literary texts should be included in the lesson content at all three levels of English, but their role is not clearly defined. The overarching aim of the study is thus to examine the role of literary texts in upper secondary EFL education from the EFL teachers’ perspective, in order to discuss the relationship between curricular stipulations and EFL teachers’ decisions and approaches.     Sammanfattning : The aim of this study is to examine the prospects of developing intercultural understanding through English as a foreign language (EFL) education in the Swedish comprehensive school. This overall aim is split into two subordinate aims: (1) to analyse and problematize the intercultural dimension of EFL as three discourses, research discourse, authority discourse and teacher discourse; (2) to relate the above discourses to each other in order to reveal a space for the interpretation of culture teaching and learning culture in EFL.
