  1. 1. On the function endogenous pain controlling systems in healthy subjects and patients with peripheral or central neuropathic pain

    Författare :Birgitta Tuveson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Painful peripheral neuropathy; Central post-stroke pain; Dynamic mechanical allodynia; Endogenous pain modulation; Heterotopic noxious conditioning stimulation; Quantitative sensory testing; Ondansetron;

    Sammanfattning : Introduction and aim: Activity in the nociceptive system is modulated by descending inhibitory and facilitatory supraspinal endogenous control. Altered balance between inhibition and facilitation has been suggested to at least partly explain the maintenance of some persistent pain conditions. LÄS MER

  2. 2. The role of pain modulation in non-suicidal self-injury

    Författare :Jens Fust; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Individuals with non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) behavior tend to report feeling little or no pain when they self-injure. Moreover, in laboratory studies the NSSI population tends to demonstrate reduced sensitivity to painful stimuli. There is reason to believe that hypoalgesia could be a risk factor for developing and maintaining NSSI. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Brain mechanisms in pain regulation

    Författare :Karin B Jensen; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The subjective sensitivity to pain differs greatly between individuals and neuroimaging has contributed to the understanding of the cerebral mechanisms involved in pain regulation. The descending pain inhibitory circuitry is a well defined cerebral network that enables regulation of afferent nociceptive information. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Provoked vestibulodynia : studies on pain genetics and pain co-morbidity

    Författare :Ulrika Heddini; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :provoked vestibulodynia;

    Sammanfattning : Objective: The purpose of this thesis was to investigate a possible genetic predisposition for developing provoked vestibulodynia (PVD), focusing on previously defined single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in three genes with a known influence on endogenous pain modulation: GCH1, OPRM1 and 5HT-2A. We also investigated the effects of any potential interactions between these SNPs and the use of hormonal contraceptives, serum levels of β-endorphin and symptoms of anxiety and depression, on the risk of developing PVD and general pain sensitivity. 5. 5. Estrogen receptor expression in relation to pain modulation and transmission : experimental studies in rats

    Författare :Åsa Amandusson; Anders Blomqvist; Kaj Fried; Ola Hermanson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medical cell biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi; MEDICINE;

    Sammanfattning : Estrogens have a remarkably wide range of actions in the mammalian brain. They not only play a pivotal role in reproductive behavior and sexual differentiation, but also contribute to e.g. thermoregulation, feeding, memory, neuronal survival and the perception of somatosensory stimuli.
