1. Classical and Quantum Descriptions of Proteins, Lipids and Membranes
Sammanfattning : In this thesis the properties of proteins and membranes are studied by molecular dynamics simulations. The subject is decomposed into parts addressing free energy calculations in proteins, mechanical inclusion models for lipid bilayers, phase transitions and structural correlations in lipid bilayers and atomistic lipid bilayer models. 2. Finite element methods for surface problems
Sammanfattning : The purpose of this thesis is to further develop numerical methods for solving surface problems by utilizing tangential calculus and the trace finite element method. Direct computation on the surface is possible by the use of tangential calculus, in contrast to the classical approach of mapping 2D parametric surfaces to 3D surfaces by means of differential geometry operators. 3. Recombinant spider silk for biomedical applications - from functionalizing surfaces of synthetic materials to in vitro modelling of tissues
Sammanfattning : Spider silk is a natural protein-based material known for its medicinal use and remarkable mechanical properties. Structures made thereof are both strong and elastic and have been shown to be favorable matrices for tissue engineering. LÄS MER
4. Effects of Ubiquinone-10 on the Stability and Mechanical Properties of Lipid Membranes
Sammanfattning : Ubiquinones are a group of fat-soluble molecules present in many biological membranes. The most abundant version in humans, ubiquinone-10 (Q10), plays an important role in the mitochondrial respiration chain and also functions as a powerful antioxidant. Accumulating evidence suggests that Q10 also could have other functions in the membrane. LÄS MER
5. Modelling of the Fletcher-Gent effect and obtaining hyperelastic parameters for filled elastomers
Sammanfattning : The strain amplitude dependency , i.e. the Fletcher-Gent effect and Payne effect, and the strain rate dependency of rubber with reinforcing fillers is modelled using a modified boundary surface model and implemented uniaxially. LÄS MER
