11. Beyond carbon-limitation : A re-evaluation of the ecological role of photorespiration and direct oxygen photoreduction in seagrasses
Sammanfattning : Seagrasses living in shallow coastal waters are regularly subjected to changes in environmental conditions including the two essential factors for photosynthesis: dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and irradiance. This thesis focuses on the photosynthetic responses of seagrasses to carbon limitation induced by community metabolism and/or high light intensities. LÄS MER
12. Sphagnum limits : Physiology, morphology and climate
Sammanfattning : Sphagnum is the most important plant genus in terms of terrestrial carbon cycling. It and the habitats it creates store an equivalent of ~68% of the CO2 in the atmosphere. The genus has little dispersal limitation and the mire habitats are functionally similar at global scales. LÄS MER
13. Ecological significance of within-species leaf trait variability : a test using an island area gradient
Sammanfattning : There is growing recognition of the need to incorporate within-species trait variability into trait-based studies to improve understanding of community assembly and how plant communities drive ecosystem processes. Given that many plant species can occupy a wide range of environmental conditions, studies that have traditionally focused solely on between-species trait variability and neglected within-species trait variability could lead to an incomplete picture of how plant traits influence community- and ecosystem-level properties. 14. Selection during Early Life Stages and Local Adaptation in Arabidopsis thaliana
Sammanfattning : Organisms are often adapted to their local environment, but the role of early life stages in adaptive differentiation among populations remains poorly known. The aim of my thesis was to investigate the contribution of early life stages to the magnitude and genetic basis of local adaptation, and to identify the underlying adaptive traits. LÄS MER
15. Population size, viability and genetic diversity in the orchid Gymnadenia conopsea
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I combined controlled crosses with genetic and demographic data to examine how a main conservation value indicator, population size, was associated with estimates of population viability. I focused on the still common, but decreasing, perennial orchid Gymnadenia conopsea at two spatial scales—locally on the island Öland, in SE Sweden, and regionally across Scandinavia. LÄS MER
