Sammanfattning : Political oaths were widespread in medieval times, but all over Europe their use dwindled in the early modern period, resulting in the institution being dismantled in many states. In previous research, this decay has been explained by pointing to the emergence of the state in this period, through processes such as bureaucratization, nationalization, and confessionalization, and, later, secularization. Sammanfattning : This thesis consists of four studies that further develop the perspectives introduced in the author’s licential dissertation, Sweden and the European Miracles: Conquest, Growth and Voice (1996). The dynamic properties of the European system of independent but interacting societies are traced back to the institutional polystruc-turality of European feudalism and the peculiarities of Sweden’s historical experience are asserted to be part of this intersocietal heritage. Sammanfattning : This investigation was originally based on the family archives of the bergsmän (iron producing peasants) in the parishes of Torskåer and Ovansjö in south-west Gästrikland. They gave an insight into a rather unknown proto-industry, run since medieval times by peasant households and flourishing in the 18th and 19th centuries. LÄS MER
