  1. 6. Endothelium-derived Vasoactive Factors and Leukocyte-derived Inflammatory Mediators. Studies in subjects with or at risk for vascular disease

    Författare :Anwaar M Ibrahim; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Prostacyclin.; Postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy; Nitric oxide; Endothelin; Diabetes mellitus; Cytokines; Cholesterol; Atherosclerosis; Cerebral ischemia; Cardiovascular system; Kardiovaskulära systemet;

    Sammanfattning : This study was undertaken to evaluate relationships between endothelial function (assessed as mediators of endothelium-derived vasoactive factors such as nitric oxide [NO], prostacyclin [PGI2] and endothelin [ET-1] ), and risk factors for atherosclerosis, as well as to study possible relationships between endothelial function and leukocyte activation (indicated by measurements of leukocyte-derived inflammatory mediators) in subjects with or at risk for atherosclerosis. In subjects with asymptomatic atherosclerosis we found inverse relationships between cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) in platelets (mediator of NO activity) and both serum total cholesterol and plasma ET-1 suggesting that NO-mediated vasodilation may be impaired in hypercholesterolemia and that maintenance of vascular tone is achieved by a balance between NO and ET-1. 2. 7. The effects of endothelin-1 in human adipose tissue

    Författare :Anna Eriksson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Obesity is a result of an imbalance between energy intake and energy expenditure ending in an excessive accumulation of body fat. Being overweight or obese increases the risk of death because of obesity related complications, e.g. insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and some types of cancer. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Endothelial dysfunction in atherosclerosis and type 2 diabetes : clinical and molecular studies of the role of endothelin and arginase

    Författare :Arnar Þór Rafnsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Atherosclerosis is a modern world scourge and the number of people worldwide diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (T2D) is on the rise, causing much morbidity and mortality. Endothelial dysfunction (ED) is an early sign of atherosclerosis and contributes to vascular complications in T2D. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Endothelin-1 in the regulation of vascular function and glucose metabolism in insulin resistance

    Författare :Alexey Shemyakin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Insulin resistance plays a major role in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes and is an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Endothelial dysfunction, characterized by reduced bioactivity of nitric oxide and increased activity of the vasoconstrictor and pro-inflammatory peptide endothelin-1 (ET-1), is present in insulin-resistant states and is an important factor promoting the development of cardiovascular complications in patients with insulin resistance. 5. 10. Cardiovascular risk factors in renal artery stenosis : Effects of renal angioplasty and angiotensin II receptor antagonism

    Författare :Elzbieta Nowakowska-Fortuna; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; inflammation; renovascular hypertension; endothelin 1; apolipoprtoein C-III; brain natriuretic peptides; angiotensin II receptor antagonism; renal angioplasty; atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis;

    Sammanfattning : Renovascular hypertension (RVH) caused by atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis (ARAS) is one of the most common forms of secondary hypertension. The prognosis for patients with RVH is much worse compared to patients with primary hypertension, and caused by a high cardiovascular morbidity. LÄS MER
