1. Conceptual and empirical issues of technological change in the health care sector : Innovation and diffusion of hemodialysis and renal transplantation
Sammanfattning : The present study focuses on one instance of technological change in medical practice; the innovation and diffusion of hemodialysis and renal transplantation (ESRD treatment)- two therapeutic innovations aimed at the treatment of patients suffering from chronic renal failure. The purpose of the thesis is to study the processes by which medical technology is developed imd disseminated. LÄS MER
2. Factors affecting body weight development and eating behaviour in patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis treatment
Sammanfattning : Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and hemodialysis (HD) have different metabolic effects in dialysis patients, since absorption of intraperitoneal glucose implies an additional energy source in CAPD patients. In spite of this, protein-energy malnutrition is known to occur frequently, both in patients on hemodialysis and in patients on CAPD, and an association with increased morbidity and mortality is well established. 3. End stage renal disease in type 1 diabetes : time trends and risk factors
Sammanfattning : Background and aims: Sweden has a high incidence of type 1 diabetes (T1D) and the incidence is increasing worldwide. The incidence is now twice as high as when the registration of childhood onset T1D in Sweden started in 1977. One of the major risk factors for developing late complications such as renal failure (ESRD) is duration of T1D. LÄS MER
4. End-stage renal disease patients and their spouses : Coping, perceived consequences, and health-related quality of life
Sammanfattning : The general aim was to study use and efficiency of coping strategies to handle problems occasioned by illness and treatment among three groups of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients (n=86) and their spouses (n=55). A sample of the Swedish population (n=519) was studied as a reference. LÄS MER
5. Molecular studies of complications in end stage renal disease : focus on expression and variations of candidate susceptibility genes
Sammanfattning : End stage renal disease (ESRD) is a complex multifactorial disorder, where both environmental and genetic factors are contributing to the phenotype. The most common complications seen in ESRD patients are malnutrition, inflammation and atherosclerosis and the coexistence of these complications is denoted the MIA syndrome, which is associated with inexplicably high mortality.
