1. Evaluating Tropical Upper-tropospheric Water in Climate Models Using Satellite Data
Sammanfattning : Measuring and simulating moist processes in the tropical upper troposphere are difficult tasks. Humidity in this region of the atmosphere is mainly supplied by deep convection and, problems with simulated convection areknown to be a major contributor to uncertainties in climate model projections. 2. Inter-annual variability of rainfall in Central America : Connection with global and regional climate modulators
Sammanfattning : Central America is a region regularly affected by natural disasters, with most of them having a hydro-meteorological origin. Therefore, the understanding of annual changes of precipitation upon the region is relevant for planning and mitigation of natural disasters. LÄS MER
3. Satellite measurements and climate modelling of water in the tropical upper troposphere
Sammanfattning : The International Panel on Climate Change (2007) has identified key areas of uncertainty with regards to future climate change, e.g., the upper troposphere. A portion of the uncertain- ties come from climate models and this makes model accuracy very important. LÄS MER
4. Extreme Storms in the North Atlantic and Europe
Sammanfattning : A study of the most extreme cyclones affecting the North Atlantic and Europe is presented with particular focus on extreme windstorms over the densely populated area of Western Europe, whose associated high surface wind speeds are capable of causing extensive structural damage and occasionally a loss of life.A novel cyclone identification and tracking algorithm is presented which explicitly recognises ‘multi-centre cyclones’ (MCCs), defined as cyclonic systems which contain two or three sea-level pressure minima. 5. Atmospheric & Oceanic Applications of Eulerian and Lagrangian Transport Modelling
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents several ways to understand transports of air and water masses in the atmosphere and ocean, and the transports of energy that they imply. It presents work using various kinds of observations as well as computer simulations of the atmosphere and oceans. LÄS MER
