16. Conjugated linoleic acid and the metabolic syndrome : Clinical and metabolic studies with special reference to insulin resistance, oxidative stress and inflammation
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to investigate the metabolic effects of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in middle-aged men with the metabolic syndrome, a high-risk group for type 2 diabetes. CLA is a group of fatty acid isomers with antiobesity and antidiabetogenic effects in animals, and CLA is therefore used as a supplement in humans. LÄS MER
17. Final-State-Resolved Mutual Neutralization of Li+ and H-
Sammanfattning : We studied the mutual neutralization of Li+ and H- at effective collision energies of a few hundred meV, which corresponds to temperatures of around 2000 K, in the double ion storage ring DESIREE.We present a new approach to match beam velocities and a new general analysis method for non-fragmenting mutual neutralization at DESIREE. Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to understand the role of different specific immune effectors with regard to polyomavirus persistence and polyomavirus induced tumor development. 19. The optical properties of automatically darkening welding filters based on liquid crystal technology
Sammanfattning : This thesis addresses the problem of the poor optical angular properties displayed by automatically darkening welding filters that are based on liquid crystal technology. It is shown that by reducing thetwist-angle present in the liquid crystal cell to below that of 90° together with employment of a novel polariser arrangement, an optical shutter design using a double-cell construction is obtained thatpossesses a reduced angular transmittance variation when in the activated phase. 20. Theory of electronic structure and transport in heterostructure nanowires
Sammanfattning : Today, semi-conductor nanowires can be grown with very high precision, using epitaxy. This allows for studies of new nanowire-based quantum devices, likely to be part of novel quantum technologies in the future. This thesis concerns nanostructures based on InAs nanowires. LÄS MER
