11. Colonization processes of soil fauna and mycorrhizal fungi
Sammanfattning : Colonization consists of two parts, a dispersal phase followed by establishment and reproduction at a new site. Dispersal behaviour influences survival and the access to resources and mates of individuals and is thus closely linked to an organism's fitness. LÄS MER
12. Growth conditions and individual quality in starlings
Sammanfattning : Variation in growth conditions during ontogeny may result in permanent differences in individual quality. This thesis focuses on how starlings are affected by environmental variation during the nestling period. Both landscape differences in food availability and experimental food supplementation affected survival and growth of nestlings. LÄS MER
13. Flight strategies in migrating birds: when and how to fly
Sammanfattning : Wind has a profound influence on migrating birds since it inevitably will influence travel time and energy expenditure. In this thesis I investigate how migrating birds are affected by, and use winds. LÄS MER
14. Dispersal, inbreeding and fitness in natural populations
Sammanfattning : To evaluate how inbreeding affects the viability of small populations, it is crucial to determine what constitutes a population (i.e., the number of breeders in local patches and the degree of dispersal), and also to estimate the reproductive consequences of philopatry and emigration. 15. Evolution and Ecology of AhR genes in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.)
Sammanfattning : In vertebrates, studies of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) have been of particular interest due to its direct involvement in the toxic effects exerted by several environmental pollutants, such as PCB and dioxin. After binding to the toxic molecule, this receptor initiates transcription of several genes that are part of the biotransformation battery but most notably the cytochrome P450 (CYP) genes, which results in an excessive release of oxidative enzymes and free radicals.
