1. Direct Conversion of Human Fibroblasts to Induced Neurons
Sammanfattning : During direct cellular reprogramming, forced expression of key transcription factors (TFs) directly converts one terminally differentiated cell type into that of another fate, exemplified in this theses by the conversion of fibroblasts into functional induced neurons (iNs). Direct conversion of mouse fibroblasts to functional neurons was established in 2010, and the starting point of my doctoral thesis was the aim to transfer iN-technology to human cells and to explore the potential of this technique in regards to generate subtype-specific neurons as well as to use these cells for transplantation studies. 2. Programming Blood Cell Fates. Insights from Direct Lineage Conversion and Development
Sammanfattning : Red blood cells (RBC) and platelets constitute the non-immune branch of the hematopoietic system and are responsible for the vital functions of transporting oxygen to the tissues and clotting blood vessel injuries, respectively. These cells are produced during embryonic development and throughout life through a process called hematopoiesis which is tightly regulated by extrinsic and intrinsic factors. LÄS MER
3. Generation of human astrocytes for disease modeling. A study based on stem cells, direct conversion and genome engineering to dissect the role of astrocytes in leukodystrophies
Sammanfattning : Astrocytes are one of the major cell types in the central nervous system and are indispensable for brain development and function. The human brain and human astrocytes have unique structures and functions that are not present in other animal species. LÄS MER
4. System Perspectives on Hydro-Kinetic Energy Conversion
Sammanfattning : Free-flowing water currents such as tides and unregulated water courses could contribute to world electricity production given the emergence of robust technical solutions for extracting the energy. At Uppsala University, a concept for converting the energy in water currents to electricity using a vertical axis turbine with fixed blade-pitch and a direct-drive permanent magnet generator is studied. 5. Gene conversion of the mouse MHC class II
Sammanfattning : The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) is the most polymorphic vertebrate gene loci known to exist. Gene products of the MHC are responsible for presentation of antigen derived peptides to T cells of the immune system, which thereby become activated and involved in the elimination of particles recognised as non-self.
