1. Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus : epidemiology and diagnostics
Sammanfattning : Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is a progressive neurological condition characterized by a deterioration of gait, cognition, and continence. The diagnosis is based on a combination of enlarged ventricles seen in neuroimaging, with typical clinical findings. iNPH often affects elderly individuals (i.e. LÄS MER
2. Lung mechanics in the aging lung and in acute lung injury. Studies based on sinusoidal flow modulation
Sammanfattning : Knowledge about lung mechanics is of interest in intensive care to adjust mechanical ventilation and in the lung laboratory for diagnostics and evaluation of patients with various kinds of respiratory diseases. In mechanical ventilation a single inspiratory elastic pressure-volume (Pel/V) curve is difficult to interpret due to continuing re-expansion of collapsed lung units over a large pressure interval. 3. Laser diode systems for photodynamic therapy and medical diagnostics
Sammanfattning : This work concerns techniques for improvement of the coherence properties of diode lasers so that they may be used in two specific medical applications: (Interstitial) photodynamic therapy (PDT) and laser-induced fluorescence diagnostics. In the first application, spatial coherence is crucial, since the treatment light should be delivered through relatively thin optical fibers to optimize treatment and to facilitate minimally invasive treatment. 4. Phosphatidylethanol - formation and degradation in blood and organs
Sammanfattning : Phosphatidylethanol (PEth) is an abnormal phospholipid formed exclusively by the action of phospholipase D (PLD) in the presence of ethanol. The degradation of PEth is slow and due to its accumulation in some cells the possibility to use PEth as marker of ethanol intake has been proposed. LÄS MER
5. Ultrasonic Methods for 2D Arterial Wall Movement Measurements
Sammanfattning : Cardiovascular diseases constitute the major cause of morbidity and mortality in the Western World. To increase our knowledge of cardiovascular diseases, it is important to find methods, preferably non-invasive ones, to study very early manifestations of vascular disease. LÄS MER
