  1. 1. En minoritets odyssé : Upprätthållande och transformation av etnisk identitet i förhållande till moderniseringsprocesser : det assyriska exemplet

    Författare :Fuat Deniz; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Sociology; ethnic identity; maintenance; transformation; social practices; discourses; Assyrian; Syrian-ortodox; Turkey; Sweden; ethnic elits; Sociologi; Sociology; Sociologi; Sociology; sociologi;

    Sammanfattning : This dissertation concerns a minority, Christian Assyrians, from the Middle East that over many centuries have developed practices to maintain their collective identity. It considers their history in this century in the context of the breakup of the Ottoman Empire and the formation of the Turkish national state which brought with it discrimination, forced movement, and mass murder of the Assyrian minority as well as other minorities. 2. 2. Restorative and neuroprotective treatment strategies for Parkinson’s disease: tudies on fetal dopamine cell transplants and GDNF delivery by intracerebral injections and recombinant AAV vectors

    Författare :Deniz Kirik; Neurobiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; adeno-associated virus; regeneration; neuroprotection; glial-cell-line-derived-neurotrophic factor; cell death; substantia nigra; dopamine; neurofysiologi; neuropsykologi; Neurologi; neurophysiology; neuropsychology; Neurology; tyrosine hydroxylase; sensorimotor behavior; transplantation; gene therapy;

    Sammanfattning : The intrastriatal 6-hydroxydopamine lesion model in rats is particularly useful in studies testing new therapeutic strategies for Parkinson’s disease. This thesis work (1) describes the characterization of the motor deficits after different types of intrastriatal lesions and identifies the four-site terminal lesion as a model of symptomatic Parkinson’s disease; (2) using the same model, provides evidence that the functional impact of the dopamine cell grafts are dependent on interactions with the host brain; (3) demonstrates that protection or restitution of normal motor function after 6-hydroxydopamine lesions can be achieved if glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor is administered in the striatum at the time of the terminal fiber degeneration. 3. 3. Impacts of Regional Climate Change on Swedish Forests: An Evaluation Using Process-based Regional Ecosystem Modelling Approach

    Författare :Deniz Koca; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; fysisk geografi; Geologi; Geology; physical geography; Sweden; forest management; diversity; carbon sequestration; net primary productivity; regional climate change; process-based regional ecosystem modelling;

    Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this thesis was to provide a representative estimate of the potential impacts of climate change and increased atmospheric CO2 concentrations on Swedish forest ecosystems and the key ecosystem services they provide. In order to achieve this task, fi rst LPJ-GUESS, a process-based regional ecosystem modelling framework, was applied to explore how possible shifts in climatic zones according to a range of regional climate scenarios may lead to changes in the tree species distribution and composition, net primary productivity (NPP) and carbon sequestration capacity of potential natural ecosystems on species level and at the regional scale. 4. 4. Laboratory Investigations of Frost Action Mechanisms in Soils

    Författare :Deniz Dagli; Jan Laue; Tommy Edeskär; Lukas Arenson; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Cold Regions Soil Mechanics; Frost Action; Frost Depth; Frost Heave; Heat Flow in Soils; Ice Lens Formation; Image Analysis; Laboratory Freezing Test; Soil Mechanics; Geoteknik;

    Sammanfattning : Phase change of the water in the soil skeleton under cold climate conditions (also known as frost action in soils) affects soil properties and can be responsible for serious alterations in a soil body; causing damages (due to the volumetric expansion known as frost heave) to structures on or below the ground surface such as foundations, roads, railways, retaining walls and pipelines, etc. In order to improve the current design methods for roads against frost action, the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) has initiated a research program. 5. 5. Improving the accuracy of gene regulatory network inference from noisy data

    Författare :Deniz Seçilmiş; Erik L.L. Sonnhammer; Pierre Geurts; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biochemistry towards Bioinformatics; biokemi med inriktning mot bioinformatik;

    Sammanfattning : Gene regulatory networks (GRNs) control physiological and pathological processes in a living organism, and their accurate inference from measured gene expression can identify therapeutic mechanisms for complex diseases such as cancers. The biggest obstacle in achieving the accurate reconstruction of GRNs is called ‘noise’, which considerably alters the measured gene expression because the noise generally dominates the biological signal.
