1. Oceanographic studies of the Baltic Sea with emphasis on sea ice and mixing processes
Sammanfattning : This thesis comprises of model estimates of the water and heat budgets, re-estimating of the budget of deep-water mixing energy, model studies of generation mechanisms for internal waves, sea ice dynamermics and finally sea ice monitoring. Common site for all the studies are the Baltic Sea. LÄS MER
2. Ocean mixing and polynyas at Maud Rise, Weddell Sea
Sammanfattning : The Weddell Sea Polynya is an intermittent, ice free area in the marginal ice zone with an extent of up to 350 000 km². It was first observed by satellites in the winter seasons of 1974-1976. In 2016 and 2017, an open-ocean polynya opened over the Maud Rise oceanic plateau in the eastern Weddell Sea, which was the largest since the 70’s. LÄS MER
3. Turbulence in the sea ice impacted Southern Ocean and its implications for primary production and carbon export
Sammanfattning : The sea ice impacted Southern Ocean, south of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, is one of the most important regions on earth for the cycling of carbon and distribution of heat and freshwater around the globe. Here, along-isopycnal upwelling of warm, carbon-rich circumpolar deep water coincides with the annual growth and melt of Antarctic sea ice that represents one of the worlds largest surface water transformations. 4. Some Physical and Environmental Aspects of Shallow Ice Covered Lakes : Emphasis on Lake Vendyurskoe, Karelia, Russia
Sammanfattning : The ice cover presence on the surface of a lake insulates the water body from the atmosphere. This prevents or reduces the influence of processes which depend on the exchange between the atmosphere and the water surface. LÄS MER
5. Physical control of primary production in a sub-arctic reservoir
Sammanfattning : The first paper (Paper I) in this thesis treats autumn cooling in the Swedish lake Väsman. The water temperature is simulated using a one-dimensional lake model where the vertical mixing is calculated by a k - ɛ turbulence model. The heat exchange between the atmosphere and the lake is formulated in terms of heat fluxes. LÄS MER
