16. The effects of exposure to microplastics and pollutants on the arthropod microbiome
Sammanfattning : Anthropogenic pollution is widespread across various ecosystems. This disturbance can alter the interaction between a host and its associated microbiome, with repercussions for hosts traits such as health, behavior, and host evolution. LÄS MER
17. Micro-by-micro interactions : Aggregation dynamics, biofilms, and ecotoxicological impacts of suspended solids
Sammanfattning : Increasing concerns arise regarding the environmental risk of microplastics (MP) and their interactions with biota, prompting numerous effect studies. However, current ecotoxicology methods fall short when it comes to assessing MP impacts. LÄS MER
18. Industrial by-products in treatment of metals from polluted water
Sammanfattning : Water treatment can be carried out effectively by passive, low cost methods, as an addition or alternative to existing advanced technology. Energy and resource use can be optimized (i.e. minimized) by reusing by-products from local or regional manufacturing of timber and steel. LÄS MER
19. Mixture toxicity of pesticides and biological effects in agricultural streams : field and laboratory studies
Sammanfattning : The main objective of this thesis was to examine pesticide mixture toxicity and its effects on aquatic biota in agricultural streams. This was accomplished by (1) calculating the ΣTUs for algae and Daphnia magna and a pesticide toxicity index (PTI) based on water quality standards (WQS) for long-term monitoring data (2002-2010), (2) by performing algal inhibition tests with Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, using both collected in situ water samples and reconstituted water spiked with field-observed pesticide mixtures, and (3) by studying seasonal changes in macroinvertebrate and diatom communities during 2008 in four agricultural streams and determine a set of community-based metrics such as species richness, diversity, ASPT, SPEAR and IPS. 20. Pesticide impact of intensive banana production on aquatic ecosystems in Costa Rica
Sammanfattning : A combination of chemical and biological studies demonstrated extensive surface water contamination, the occurrence of pesticides in sediments, especially near the banana plantation areas, and biological impacts. Pesticides were even found in the downstream waters of the Tortuguero conservation area, a highly diverse wetland that protects several endangered species. LÄS MER
