16. Characterisation of pollutants in stormwater treatment facilities
Sammanfattning : The overall objective of this thesis is to increase the knowledge of both the pollutants within stormwater treatment facilities and the maintenance of these facilities. This objective has been achieved by studying water and sediment with respect to metal concentrations, fractionation, and toxicity from ponds, sedimentation tanks, and gully pots with different catchment characteristics as well as from the sediment removal process. 17. Analytical and numerical approaches to estimate peak shear strength of rock joints
Sammanfattning : In Sweden, there exists a large number of dams. Many of them are founded on rock masses normally affected by the presence of sub-horizontal rock fractures, which makes sliding along rock joints under the dam foundation one of the most critical failure mechanism. LÄS MER
18. Terrestrial Si dynamics in the Arctic: a study on biotic and abiotic controls
Sammanfattning : Silicon is the next most abundant element in the Earth’s crust and its biogeochemical cycle is linked with that of carbon. Further, silicon is a beneficial nutrient for plants in terrestrial ecosystems and a key nutrient for diatoms in aquatic ecosystems. LÄS MER
19. Toward Realistic Failure Evaluations for Concrete Buttress Dams
Sammanfattning : Concrete dams, complex structures supporting massive loads, have traditionally been assessed using simplified 2D analytical stability analyses based on the rigid body assumption. Previous studies have shown that 3D behavior, such as the interaction between the monoliths and the valley's geology, can greatly impact the load-bearing capacity of gravity dams but remains largely unexplored in buttress dams. 20. Sediment transport from source to sink in the Lake Baikal basin : Impacts of hydroclimatic change and mining
Sammanfattning : Different magnitude, intensity and timing of precipitation can impact runoff, hillslope erosion and transport of sediment along river channels. Human activities, such as dam construction and surface mining can also considerably influence transport of sediment and sediment-bound contaminants. LÄS MER
