1. Some Characteristics of Human Prostasomes and Their Relationship to Prostate Cancer
Sammanfattning : Background: The secretory epithelial cells of the prostate gland use sophisticated vehicles named prostasomes to relay important information to sperm cells in semen. This prostasome-forming and secretory ability of the epithelial cells is also preserved in poorly differentiated prostate cancer cells. LÄS MER
2. Nanostructured surfaces created by the interactions of dendrimers and oppositely charged amphiphiles
Sammanfattning : The research described in this thesis aims to understand the interactions between cationic poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers and small oppositely charged amphiphiles at the solid-liquid and air-liquid interfaces in relation to the bulk solution behavior. There is high interest in PAMAM dendrimers because they are well-defined polymers with a hierarchical architecture which makes them promising materials as nanocapsules and gene vectors. LÄS MER
3. Design and evaluation of drug delivery vehicles
Sammanfattning : A crucial aspect of drug delivery is efficient transport to the site of action. Thus, there is a need to design and evaluate new delivery vehicles. In this thesis two delivery vehicles, cell-penetrating peptides and bacterial ghosts, were evaluated. LÄS MER
4. Endocytosis of therapeutic macromolecules in tumor cells - Mechanistic aspects of the proteoglycan receptor function
Sammanfattning : Novel therapeutics to combat cancer are urgently needed. Most current pharmacological therapies have severe side effects and are seldom curative. Macromolecular drugs, and in particular nucleic acid based drugs, offer a potential remedy for this situation. LÄS MER
5. On the binding of growth-promoting polyamines to proteoglycans: Implications for growth-regulation and polycation-mediated gene transfer
Sammanfattning : Initial investigations were directed at studying the interaction between polyamines and various glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). The polyamine spermine displayed binding to dermatan sulphate (DS) and heparan sulphate (HS) with similar (Kd, 3.9 x 10-4 M) and higher (Kd, 0.37 x 10-6 M) affinity, respectively, than to DNA. LÄS MER
