  1. 6. Parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP), calcium and human osteoblast-like cells

    Författare :Jon A Tsai; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :hOB cells; PTHrP; cAMP; IGFs; IGFBPs; IL-1ß; TGF-ß; [Ca 2 ]i; [Ca2 ]O;

    Sammanfattning : Parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) may cause humoral hypercalcernia of malignancy (HHM) when overproduced by malignant tumors, but is also produced in lower amounts under normophysiological conditions in practically all cell types, including osteoblasts. One of the aims of the present study was to investigate interactions between PTHrP and osteoblasts, to elucidate bone-regulating functions of PTHrP. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Swelling and Mechanical Properties of Polymer Gels: Salt, Macroion and Network Topology Effects

    Författare :Samuel Edgecombe; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; volume decrease upon uniaxial extension; interpenetrating networks; loose-end effects; polydispersity effects; macroion deswelling; salt deswelling; polymer gels; polyelectrolyte gels; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : The work in this thesis concerns polymer gels, especially their swelling and mechanical properties modelled using a coarse-grained model of polyelectrolytes. The method used to study polymer gels was molecular simulation utilising the simulation package MOLSIM. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Neuronal and endocrine cells' susceptibility to physiologic and toxic stimuli : a study on the effects of steroid hormones

    Författare :Eva Ahlbom; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The propensity of a cell to die can be influenced by a number of factors, including hormones, which affect the intracellular and extracellular milieu. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the effects of hormones on cell fate in the nervous system and in the pituitary, with special reference to glucocorticoid and gonadal hormones. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Genetic analysis of neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) patients and NF2-associated tumors with emphasis on chromosome 22 deletions

    Författare :Carl E G Bruder; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) is an autosomal dominant disease with the hallmark of bilateral vestibular schwannomas. NF2 patients may also develop schwannomas at other locations as well as meningiomas, neurofibromas and ependymomas. NF2 shows a distinct clinical variability ranging from very mild to severe forms.
