16. Stem and progenitor cell involvement in acute lymphoblastic leukemia
Sammanfattning : Leukemic stem cells (LSCs) share the capacity of self renewal and extensive proliferation with normal hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), and are therefore obvious targets for therapy. As such, they need to be identified and characterized in order to elucidate what drives them, and what separates them from their normal counterparts. LÄS MER
17. Pathophysiology of 5-fluorouracil induced cardiotoxicity : a clinical and experimental study
Sammanfattning : This thesis concerns the pathophysiology of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) induced cardiotoxicity. The aim of the clinical studies was to determine whether hemorheological factors might explain 5-FU cardiotoxicity (I) and if the syndrome was associated with free radical (FR) generation and lipid peroxidation (II). 18. Development of adenoviral vectors for monitoring telomerase activity in living cells
Sammanfattning : ABSTRACT Telomerase activity is a potential molecular marker for cancer and primitive cells in regenerative tissues. The most commonly used method to measure telomerase activity in cells is the telomerase reverse amplification protocol (TRAP) assay, where the protein extracts derived from homogenized cells are analysed. 19. Neuroblastoma Cell Differentiation: The Role of Neurotrophin Receptor Signaling and N-myc Expression
Sammanfattning : Neuroblastoma is a tumor of sympathetic nervous system derivation, mostly afflicting young children. This thesis is focused on a group of receptor proteins for neurotrophic factors, the Trk family, and on N-Myc, a transcription factor, all important in the formation of the sympathetic nervous system as well as in determining neuroblastoma patient outcome. 20. Transcriptional analysis of mantle cell lymphoma - a global search for cellular origin and therapeutic targets
Sammanfattning : This thesis is based upon four original papers describing the characterisation of mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) tumours and cell lines in comparison with different populations of normal B cells. Gene expression profiling, which were used in the studies, has during recent years developed as an important tool in characterisation of different types of malignancies. LÄS MER
