  1. 1. The Evolution of Sexually Homologous Ornaments : Selection via Male Mate Choice Coinciding with Male-Male Competition in a Neotropical Mosquito

    Författare :Sandra South; Göran Arnqvist; Russell Bonduriansky; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; sexual selection; Sabethes cyaneus; Diptera; Culicidae; mosquito; mutual ornamentation; sexual selection; mutual mate choice; male mate choice; female ornament; ecology; animal behaviour; Ethology and behavioural ecology; Etologi och beteendeekologi; Animal Ecology; Zooekologi;

    Sammanfattning : The evolution of elaborate male ornaments via sexual selection is well-understood while the selective pressures acting on female ornaments remains unresolved. Female ornaments in species with strong sexual selection on the male homologue of the ornament were originally thought to result from an intersexual genetic correlation. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Nectar feeding behaviour and the significance of sugar meals in mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae)

    Författare :I. Helena Andersson; Uppsala universitet; []

  3. 3. Mosquitoes as a Part of Wetland Biodiversity

    Författare :Martina Schäfer; Jacob Höglund; Jan Lundström; Darold Batzer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; diversity patterns; species assemblages; functional groups; constructed wetlands; dytiscids; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Wetlands contain both aquatic and terrestrial environments which generates high biodiversity. However, they are commonly associated with mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae), and mosquitoes are usually regarded as negative by humans because they can cause nuisance and transmit diseases. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Diversity, dispersal, and interactions among diving beetles and mosquitoes in Swedish wetlands

    Författare :Elisabeth Lundkvist; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I explore why biodiversity, as exemplified by diving beetle and mosquito faunas, differs between wetlands, and what environmental factors that affect and control diversity in different types of wetlands and landscapes. The study organisms, diving beetles (Dytiscidae) and mosquitoes (Culicidae), are abundant and species-rich groups in many types of wetlands. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Botanical Repellents and Pesticides Traditionally Used Against Haematophagous Invertebrates in Lao PDR

    Författare :Chanda Vongsombath; Thomas Jaenson; Raimondas Mozuraitis; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ethnobotany; fly larvae; Lao PDR; medical entomology; mosquito repellents; myiasis; plant-based insecticides; terrestrial leeches; Haemadipsidae; Systematics and phylogenetics; Systematik och fylogeni; Organism biology; Organismbiologi; Biologi med inriktning mot systematik; Biology with specialization in Systematics;

    Sammanfattning : Haematophagous parasites and disease vectors such as leeches, ticks, mites, lice, bed bugs, mosquitoes, and myiasis-causing fly larvae are common health problems in Lao Peoples Democratic Republic (Lao PDR). A main aim of my field work in Lao PDR in 2006-2010 was to document traditional knowledge among different ethnic groups about plants that people use to repel or to kill blood-feeding invertebrates.
