1. Cancer Immunotherapy : A Preclinical Study of Urinary Bladder Cancer
Sammanfattning : Bacillus Calmette Guérin (BCG), or attenuated Mycobacterium bovis, is the gold standard of immunotherapy in the clinic to treat superficial bladder cancer. However, setbacks remain due to a high recurrence rate, side effects, and BCG-refractory disease. LÄS MER
2. Immunological Checkpoint Blockade and TLR Stimulation for Improved Cancer Therapy
Sammanfattning : This thesis concerns the investigation of novel immunotherapies for cancer eradication. CpG therapy was used in order to target antigen-presenting cells (APCs), facilitating antigen presentation and activation of T cells. LÄS MER
3. Modulation of inflammation by immunostimulatory DNA
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to elucidate the roles of different types of DNA in inflammatory responses. We compared the immune responses to nuclease-protected phosphorothioate oligodeoxynucleotides (S-ODNs) and phosphodiester oligodeoxynucleotides (O-ODNs) that either contained or lacked CpG motifs. 4. Studies of innate immune stimulation with CpG in HIV infection
Sammanfattning : Two types of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) may cause acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS): HIV-1, the most pathogenic virus of the two and found worldwide, and HIV-2, which is mostly detected in West Africa and known to be less transmissible and which demonstrates slower progression towards immunodeficiency. How CD4+ T cells are lost during these two infections is not yet completely clear; however, a constant battle against the rapid viral turnover, resulting in chronic inflammation, is thought to exhaust several compartments of the immune system. 5. Host-bacterium relationship in staphylococcal skin infection
Sammanfattning : Skin infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus are commonly occuring, both in the community and in hospitals. Despite the high prevalence of this condition, little is known about the host immune responsiveness and bacterial virulence factors during S. aureus skin infection. LÄS MER
