Sammanfattning : This corpus-based study examines adjectives and adjectival expressions used to describe characters in British children’s fiction. The focus is on diachronic variation, by comparing Victorian (19th-century) and contemporary (late 20th-century) children’s fiction, and on gender variation, by comparing the descriptions of female and male characters. 3. Conflicting Times : Multiple Temporalities in Contemporary Chinese Science Fiction
Sammanfattning : This dissertation explores the intersection of temporality and politics in contemporary Chinese science fiction. Building on previous research on Chinese science fiction, science fiction studies, as well as narrative theory and historical theory, the investigation focuses on eight key texts written by the writers Han Song, Liu Cixin, and Baoshu. 4. Seven Senses of the City : Urban Spacetime and Sensory Memory in Contemporary Sinophone Fiction
Sammanfattning : The objective of this dissertation is to investigate the narrative mechanisms and imagery that fictional works employ to conceptualize and communicate complex human experiences of space, time and memory. Furthermore, this study shows how contemporary cities change the way we think about such basic concepts by analyzing narratives that employ and encourage multisensory, spatiotemporal understandings of reality characterized by permeable boundaries between the material, social and imaginary domains.
