Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on two important topics in the field of fluid mechanics and heat transfer that were treated separately. On the one hand, the flow over rough surfaces, which is not yet completely understood, despite of the fact that it has an important implication in many engineering applications, especially in the naval industry for ships and boats because the friction drag caused by fouling, antifouling coatings and roughness in general impacts the fuel consumption and toxic emissions to the atmosphere. Sammanfattning : Two different techniques are presented for enhancing the thermal performance of natural convection cooled heat sinks. The physics is described by solving the conjugate heat transfer problem with a spectral element method. The temperature distribution is computed in two sub-domains, whose solution is then conjugated. Sammanfattning : This thesis contains mathematical treatments of three issues in thermo and fluid dynamics: swirling jets and vortex breakdown, Taylor's hypothesis and conjugate heat transfer. The work on swirling jets is focused on the study of the well-posedness of the conically self-similar free-vortex solutions to the Navier--Stokes equations. LÄS MER
