  1. 1. Inequality, Health, and Smoking

    Författare :Gustav Kjellsson; Nationalekonomiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Health Inequality; Inequality measurement; Smoking; Survey Methods; Health survey; Hospitalization; Recall error; Recall periods; Concentration index; bounded variables;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis consists of five self-contained, yet related, research papers, which all contribute to the economic literature on socioeconomic differences in health and health related behavior. The first two papers provide a compass in the discussion of how to measure health inequality and, more specifically, how to adjust measures and concepts when moving from an unbounded income variable to a bounded (or binary) health variable.     Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Abdominal obesity; concentration index; disability; focus-group discussion; gender inequality; Indonesia; mortality; older people; socioeconomic inequality; Public health; folkhälsa; epidemiologi; Epidemiology;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Population ageing has contributed to the rise of chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Concurrently, obesity prevalence is increasing in all age groups and has become a serious public health problem. Obesity is the main risk factors of the major chronic NCDs such as type 2 diabetes and has been linked to disability and mortality. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Data driven modeling in the presence of time series structure: : Improved bounds and effective algorithms

    Författare :Othmane Mazhar; Boualem Djehiche; Cristian R. Rojas; Carlo Fischione; Mohammad Reza Hesamzadeh; Boualem Djehiche; Munther Dahleh; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Time series; Non-asymptotic estimation; Minimax; Change point detection; Hidden Markov model; State space model; Least square; Penalized Regression; Random covariance matrix; Concentration inequality; Chaining integral; Self-normalized martingale inequality; Cramér-Rao inequality; van Trees inequality; Mathematical Statistics; Matematisk statistik;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis consists of five appended papers devoted to modeling tasks where the desired models are learned from data sets with an underlying time series structure. We develop a statistical methodology for providing efficient estimators and analyzing their non-asymptotic behavior. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Time and inequality - A study of individual preferences

    Författare :Hjördis Hardardottir; Nationalekonomiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Behavioral economics; Experimental economics; Individual preferences; Time preferences; Social preferences; income inequality; Health inequality;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis consists of three papers that study individual preferences. The focus of the first two papers is on time preferences. In the third paper, preferences regarding how inequality in health and income should be defined are elicited. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Economic perspectives on the obesity epidemic

    Författare :Åsa Ljungvall; Nationalekonomiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Obesity; body-mass index; BMI; waist circumference; inequality; socioeconomic inequalities; concentration index; socioeconomic disparities; time trends; economic freedom; misreporting; misclassification;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis takes its starting point in the large spread and rise in obesity prevalence that have been observed around the world, making obesity an increasing public health concern. The thesis consists of an introductory chapter, which justifies the study of obesity from economic perspectives and puts the subsequent studies in context, and four studies that address obesity from different economic perspectives.
