21. Titanium Oxide and Bone Anchorage: Role of the Complement System, and Delivery of Osteoporosis Drugs from Mesoporous TiO2
Sammanfattning : The clinical success of bone implants of titanium (Ti) is largely ascribed to the biological performance and the physicochemical properties of the outermost titanium(IV)dioxide (TiO2) layer. Several advancements have been done on TiO2 in order to optimize its healing and anchorage to bone, and there is a need for further understanding and control of the molecular reactions preceding long-term osseointegration. 22. Interactions between extracellular matrix proteins and the complement system - In the perspective of cartilage degradation in inflammatory joint diseases
Sammanfattning : Abstract: The joint diseases osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are characterized by destructive inflammatory processes that result in pathological changes of the joint tissues, including proteolytic degradation of cartilage and release of extracellular matrix proteins or fragments to the synovial fluid. The complement system, which is a part of the innate immune system, plays a central role in promoting the joint inflammation in these diseases. LÄS MER
23. Complement evasion strategies of human pathogens - the evolutionary arms race
Sammanfattning : Although the complement system, a pivotal component of innate immunty, is centrally involved in host defense against pathogens, its overactivation or deregulation may excessively amplify inflammation and contribute to immunopathology. Periodontitis, an oral infection-driven chronic inflammatory disease, has been linked with complement disruption by periodontal bacteria, resulting in inflammation and pathogenesis. LÄS MER
24. Interaction between biomaterials and innate immunity with clinical implications
Sammanfattning : Today there is an increasing clinical demand and expectation of patients for biomaterials, which underscores the importance of discovering the correlations between biomaterials and biological systems, especially blood. When an artificial material makes contact with blood, the first event is a rapid adsorption of plasma protein on the material surface, on top of which the innate immune system is triggered, with potentially detrimental consequences. 25. Complement-dependent defence against bacterial infection. Studies in C2 deficiency
Sammanfattning : The complement system is critically involved in defence against bacterial infection. C2 deficiency is, apart from mannan-binding lectin (MBL) deficiency, the most common homozygous complement deficiency among Caucasians. LÄS MER
