  1. 6. Chemically Induced DNA Damage in Extended-term Cultures of Human Lymphocytes

    Författare :Maria Andersson; Björn Hellman; Leif Busk; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Toxicology; Comet assay; DNA-damaging agents; DNA repair; Extended-term Cultures of Human Lymphocytes; Genotoxicity; Induced DNA damage; In vitro; Mouse Lymphoma Cells; Primary Cell Cultures; Reactive Oxygen Species; Toxikologi;

    Sammanfattning : Generation of DNA damage is regarded to be an important initial event in the development cancer. Consequently, a battery of tests have been developed to detect different types of genotoxic effects in order to be able to predict the potential genotoxicity and mutagenicity of chemicals, including both pharmaceutical drugs and various types of environmental and occupational agents, as well as dietary factors. 2. 7. SOD1 misfolding and aggregation in ALS : in the light of conformation-specific antibodies

    Författare :Manuela Lehmann; Jonathan D. Gilthorpe; Stefan L. Marklund; Thomas Brännström; Ulrika Nordström; Elizabeth Fisher; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; ALS; antibodies; SOD1; disordered SOD1; patient-derived models; low oxygen tension; Immunotherapy;

    Sammanfattning : Mutations in the superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) gene are linked to the progressive neurodegenerative disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). ALS-associated mutations affect the stability of the SOD1 protein and promote its unfolding. As a consequence, disordered SOD1 species can misfold and accumulate into insoluble aggregates. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Biological effects of high energy radiation and ultra high dose rates

    Författare :Björn Zackrisson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Radiobiology; 50 MV x-rays; 50 MeV electrons; in vitro; in vivo; RBE; OER; ultra high dose-rate; radiobiological models; model selection; models of stochastic processes;

    Sammanfattning : Recently a powerful electron accelerator, 50 MeV race-track microtron, has been taken into clinical use. This gives the opportunity to treat patients with higher x-ray and electron energies than before. Furthermore, treatments can be performed were the entire fractional dose can be delivered in parts of a second. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Development and comparison of in vitro toxicity methods for nanoparticles : Focus on lung cell exposure

    Författare :Siiri Latvala; Karine Elihn; Hanna Karlsson; Lennart Möller; Hannu Norppa; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Concerns for the toxic effects of airborne nanoparticles have been raised along with the increasing production of nanostructured materials. However, the health risks of nanoparticle exposure are currently not fully understood. The most commonly used techniques to study nanoparticle toxicity, both in vivo and in vitro, have several limitations. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Aspects of inflammation, angiogenesis and coagulation in preeclampsia

    Författare :Roland Boij; Leif Matthiesen; Jan Ernerudh; Maria Jenmalm; Göran Berg; Henrik Hagberg; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Preeclampsia is a major challenge to obstetricians, due to its impact on maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality and the lack of preventive and treatment strategies. The overall aim of this thesis is to increase the knowledge of the pathogenesis of preeclampsia including the role of inflammation, angiogenesis and coagulation, both locally at the fetomaternal interface and in the maternal circulation.
