1. Abdominal compartment syndrome and colonic ischaemia after abdominal aortic aneurysm repair in the endovascular era
Sammanfattning : Abdominal Compartment Syndrome (ACS) and colonic ischaemia (CI) are serious and potentially lethal complications after open (OSR) and endovascular repair (EVAR) of ruptured (rAAA) and intact (iAAA) abdominal aortic aneurysms. The aims of this thesis were to investigate the incidence, outcome, and risk factors associated with ACS (Papers I-III) and to evaluate extraluminal colonic tonometry for postoperative surveillance of colonic perfusion (Paper IV). 2. Glucocorticosteroid therapy and steroid resistance in inflammatory bowel disease
Sammanfattning : Ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) are diseases of unknown aetiology often referred to as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Glucocorticosteroids (GCS) have been used since the 1950's to treat acute attacks of these diseases. LÄS MER
3. Intestinal barrier function in health and disease
Sammanfattning : The intestinal epithelium has the dual function of absorbing nutrients and water as well as being a barrier to potentially harmful substances such as macromolecules and bacteria. In the present thesis the barrier function of the intestinal mucosa was studied in vitro in Ussing diffusion chambers. LÄS MER
4. On effectiveness in colorectal surgery : mechanical bowel preparation or not in elective colonic surgery and treatment options for elderly patients with rectal cancer
Sammanfattning : The management of patients undergoing colorectal surgery has changed in recent decades. Efforts have been made to show that perioperative physiological stress to the patient can be minimised with standardised care programmes and thus improve short term outcome after colorectal surgery. 5. The possible role of gut neuroendocrine peptides and amines in the pathogenesis and treatment of colorectal cancer
Sammanfattning : Abnormalities in colonic neuroendocrine peptides/amines were observed inrats with chemically induced colon carcinoma. This supports the assumption that neuroendocrine peptides and amines of the gut seem to be involved inthe carcinogenesis of colorectal carcinoma. LÄS MER
