16. Arthritis and immune-mediated bone loss - role of estrogen signalling pathways
Sammanfattning : Objective: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is associated with immune-mediated bone loss and thereby increased risk for fractures. Estrogen and selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) ameliorate not only the incidence and progression of experimental RA but also the immune-mediated bone loss. LÄS MER
17. From disease to genes in animal models of rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis
Sammanfattning : Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and multiple sclerosis (MS) are complex inflammatory autoimmune diseases. The aetiology is largely unknown but the risk of developing disease is dependent on both genetic and environmental factors. LÄS MER
18. The role of S100A4 protein as a regulator of inflammation and bone metabolism in experimental arthritis
Sammanfattning : S100A4 belongs to the family of calcium-binding S100 proteins and modulates cell proliferation, cytoskeletal rearrangement, cell motility, and angiogenesis. Increased levels of S100A4 expression correlate with high incidence of metastasis of cancers. LÄS MER
19. Autoantibody recognition of collagen type II in arthritis
Sammanfattning : Autoantibodies against collagen type II (CII), a protein localized in the joint cartilage, play a major role in collagen-induced arthritis (CIA), one of the most commonly used animal models for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The studies included in this thesis were undertaken to elucidate structural and functional requirements for B and T cells to recognize native CII structures during experimental arthritis as well as in human RA. 20. Cytokine regulation in rodents with experimental arthritis
Sammanfattning : The general aim of this project has been to try to elucidate the mechanisms behind induction of arthritis by using in situ hybridization and immunohistochemical methods to analyse the dynamics of the cytokine network in vivo, in the peripheral Iymphoid system and in the joints of rodents with collagen-induced arthritis (CIA)and oil-induced arthritis (OIA). We first examined the kinetics of cytokine gene expression in vivo, in the draining Iymph nodes of DA rats following immunization with rat type II collagen (RCII) emulsified in Freund's incomplete adjuvant oil (FIA) or with only FIA, which are regimens that induce CIA and OIA, respectively.
