  1. 1. On the behaviour of tailings dams : Management in cold regions

    Författare :Roger Knutsson; Jan Laue; Andy Fourie; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Soil Mechanics; Geoteknik;

    Sammanfattning : Associated to mining activities there is mine waste generated. The residues left over from mineralextraction processes are referred to as tailings, normally stored in surface tailings facilities. Thefacilities are usually confined by embankment dams, so called tailings dams. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Stabilization of fine-grained soils in cold environment and exposed to seasonal frost : By-products as hydraulic binders

    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; soft soil; clay; silt; silty sand; soil stabilisation; hydraulic binder; cement; lime; by-product; cement kiln dust CKD ; cold climate; frost; freeze-thaw; laboratory test; field test; subsoil; road construction; feinkörninge Böden; Ton; Schluff; schluffiger Sand; Bodenstabilisierung; hydraulische Bindemittel; Zement; Kalk; Nebenprodukt; Zementofenstaub; kaltes Klima; Frost; Frost-Tau; Laborversuche; Feldversuche; Verkehrsbau; Dauerhaftigkeit; finkornig jord; lera; silt; siltig sand; jordstabilisering; hydraulisk bindemedel; cement; kalk; biprodukt; cement kiln dust CKD ; kallt klimat; frost; frysning-tining; laboratorieanalyser; fältförsök; vägterrass; Geoteknik; Soil Mechanics;

    Sammanfattning : This doctoral thesis deals with the stabilization of fine-grained soils using by-product originated hydraulic binders. The use of fine-grained soils as subsoil for infrastructure projects is often limited because of the risk for instability. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Laboratory Investigations of Frost Action Mechanisms in Soils

    Författare :Deniz Dagli; Jan Laue; Tommy Edeskär; Lukas Arenson; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Cold Regions Soil Mechanics; Frost Action; Frost Depth; Frost Heave; Heat Flow in Soils; Ice Lens Formation; Image Analysis; Laboratory Freezing Test; Soil Mechanics; Geoteknik;

    Sammanfattning : Phase change of the water in the soil skeleton under cold climate conditions (also known as frost action in soils) affects soil properties and can be responsible for serious alterations in a soil body; causing damages (due to the volumetric expansion known as frost heave) to structures on or below the ground surface such as foundations, roads, railways, retaining walls and pipelines, etc. In order to improve the current design methods for roads against frost action, the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) has initiated a research program. 4. 4. Potential Use of Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage System in Arid Regions

    Författare :Qais Al-Madhlom; Jan Laue; Nadhir Al-Ansari; Sabbar Abdullah Saleh; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Aquifer thermal energy storage system; ATES; site selection; seepage velocity; aquifer vulnerability; DRASTIC; arid regions; ArcMap GIS; Soil Mechanics; Geoteknik;

    Sammanfattning : After the Oil Crises in 1973, which meant higher energy costs, the world started to look for other sources of energy. This led to the development of renewable energy techniques. Because of the intermittent nature of renewable energy, storage systems were also developed. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Use of thermosyphons in a subarctic climate

    Författare :Anna Forsström; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Soil Mechanics; Geoteknik;

    Sammanfattning : In frozen ground, climatic changes and thermal disturbance might cause thawing and degradation of ground previously frozen. Foundations built on frozen ground might be destroyed in a matter of a few seasons. These problems are mostly pronounced in permafrost regions, but also exist in regions with more moderate climates.
