  1. 1. Managing coastal eutrophication : Land-sea and hydroclimatic linkages with focus on the Baltic coastal system

    Författare :Guillaume Vigouroux; Georgia Destouni; Alice Newton; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; coastal eutrophication; land-coast-sea continuum; management; hydroclimatic change; research gaps; eutrophication modelling; temoporal trends; scoping review; Baltic Sea; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Sammanfattning : Eutrophication endangers coastal ecosystems all over the world and is most often associated with an increase in anthropogenic nutrient loads to coastal waters, which fuel the growth of algae and create a variety of environmental problems. This is also the case for the Baltic Sea where coastal waters may be affected by various land, coast-sea, and hydroclimatic drivers and feedbacks, over different scales, including the eutrophic open sea. 2. 2. Aquatic vegetation in coastal ecosystems : The role of biotic interactions and environmental change for ecosystem functions and resilience in the Baltic Sea

    Författare :Åsa Austin; Johan S. Eklöf; Joakim P. Hansen; Serena Donadi; Matthew E. S. Bracken; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biodiversity; ecosystem functions; ecosystem multifunctionality; water clarity; fish recruitment; functional traits; feedbacks; biotic interactions; competition; facilitation; foundation species; seagrass; macrophytes; lagoons; brackish water; Baltic Sea; marin ekologi; Marine Ecology;

    Sammanfattning : Coastal ecosystems are among the most productive on Earth but subjected to many human pressures. In shallow coastal areas, aquatic vegetation constitutes foundation species that sustain secondary production and act as a nutrient filter, which may buffer human impacts. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Tourism, Ecosystem Functions, and Human-Environmental Relations

    Författare :Stefan Gössling; Institutionen för tjänstevetenskap; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Social geography; Ecology; Zanzibar; world system theory; sustainable tourism; sustainable development; rainforests; human-environmental relations; groundwater; environmental consciousness; ecotourism; ecosystem functions; economic transition; cost-benefit analysis; coastal zone management; coastal communities; climate change; Air-traffic; biodiversity; Environmental technology; pollution control; Ekologi; Zanzibar; Socialgeografi; Miljöteknik; kontroll av utsläpp;

    Sammanfattning : The thesis aims at deconstructing the sustainable tourism paradigm: can tourism be "a global strategy for sustainable development", as the tourist industry claims? And will developing countries in particular profit from tourism development?To most international organizations and institutions (from the World Wide Fund for Nature to The World Bank), tourism, if carefully managed, is a positive, sustainable development tool. However, the research presented in this thesis exposes this view as unrealistically optimistic for at least three reasons: first of all, global environmental change caused by tourism has never been investigated and integrated with the discourse on sustainable tourism development. 4. 4. Radionuclides in the Baltic Sea : Ecosystem models and experiments on transport and fate

    Författare :Linda Kumblad; Nils Kautsky; Ulrik Kautsky; Michael Gilek; Michael Thorne; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; radionuclide; baltic sea; ecosystem model; ecosystem dynamics; risk assessment; safety assessment; benthic invertebrates; bioturbation; bioaccumulation; remobilisation; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Manmade radionuclides have been introduced to the environment for almost a century. The main source has been the nuclear weapons testing programmes, but accidental releases from the nuclear power production industries have also contributed. The risk to humans from potential releases from nuclear facilities is evaluated in safety assessments. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Importance of blue mussels for biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in subtidal habitats

    Författare :Pia Norling; Nils Kautsky; Tom Ysebaert; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; blue mussel; Mytilus spp.; ecosystem engineering; habitat-modifier; diversity; facilitation; ecosystem functioning; ecosystem services and water quality maintenance; Marine ecology; Marin ekologi; marin ekotoxikologi; Marine Ecotoxicology;

    Sammanfattning : Blue mussels, Mytilus spp., occur on rocky and sedimentary shores worldwide where they often form dense aggregates. These assemblages change the local environment and create unique habitats. LÄS MER
