  1. 16. Space Plasma Dynamics : Instabilities, Coherent Vortices and Covariant Parametrization

    Författare :David Sundkvist; Jan-Erik Wahlund; Andris Vaivads; Stuart Bale; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Space and plasma physics; space physics; plasma; instabilities; turbulence; coherent structures; vortex; self-organization; magnetosphere; waves; electromagnetism; covariant; space instrumentation; Rymd- och plasmafysik; Space physics; Rymdfysik;

    Sammanfattning : The magnetospheric cusps are two funnel-like regions of Earth's magnetosphere where solar wind plasma can have direct access to the ionosphere. The cusps are very dynamic regions where wave-particle interactions continuously take place and redistribute energy among different particle populations. LÄS MER

  2. 17. Alfvén Waves and Energy Transformation in Space Plasmas

    Författare :Yuri Khotyaintsev; Kalevi Mursula; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Space and plasma physics; Alfvén waves; particle acceleration; ionosphere; magnetopause; magnetic reconnection; Rymd- och plasmafysik; Space physics; Rymdfysik; Space Physics; rymdfysik;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis is focused on the role of Alfvén waves in the energy transformation and transport in the magnetosphere. Different aspects of Alfvén wave generation, propagation and dissipation are considered. The study involves analysis of experimental data from the Freja, Polar and Cluster spacecraft, as well as theoretical development. LÄS MER

  3. 18. Ion dynamics and structure of collisionless shocks in space

    Författare :Andreas Johlander; Andris Vaivads; Robert F. Wimmer-Schweingruber; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fysik med inriktning mot rymd- och plasmafysik; Physics with specialization in Space and Plasma Physics;

    Sammanfattning : Shock waves form when supersonic flows encounter an obstacle. Like in regular gases, shock waves can form in a plasma - a gas of electrically charged particles. Shock waves in plasmas where collisions between particles are very rare are referred to as collisionless shock waves. LÄS MER

  4. 19. 3D Magnetic Nulls and Regions of Strong Current in the Earth's Magnetosphere

    Författare :Elin Eriksson; Andris Vaivads; Hans Nilsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Magnetic Nulls; Particle Acceleration; Current sheets; Magnetic reconnection; Magnetosphere; Fysik med inriktning mot rymd- och plasmafysik; Physics with specialization in Space and Plasma Physics;

    Sammanfattning : Plasma, a gas of charged particles exhibiting collective behaviour, can be found everywhere in our vast Universe. The characteristics of plasma in very distant parts of the Universe can be similar to characteristics in our solar system and near-Earth space. LÄS MER
