    Sammanfattning : This thesis studies the use of polygonal columns in Greek architecture from the Geometric to the Hellenistic period. The main purpose of the research is to study the development, distribution, design, function and use of polygonal columns in order to create a new understanding on how they fit in the development of Greek architecture. By investigating the meaning of places, narratives of the Neolithic based upon the archaeological constructions of the “Funnel Beaker culture”, the ”Pitted Ware culture”, and the “Battle Axe culture” are questioned. In the hellenistic period the Greek city-states are thought to have lost their independence due to the establishment of the hellenistic hegemonies, and thereby also lost their possibilities of democratic government and of pursuing a foreign policy of their own.
