  1. 1. Volatile metabolites from microorganisms in indoor environments : sampling, analysis and identification

    Författare :Anna-Lena Sunesson; Alvin Fox; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Adsorbents; Analysis; Cultivation; Determination; Gas chromatography; Identification; Indicator substances; Indoor air; Mass spectrometry; Metabolites; Microbial volatile organic compounds; Optimization; Sampling; Sick buildings; Thermal desorption; Aspergillus versicolor; Cladosporium cladosporioides; Paecilomyces variotii; Pénicillium commune; Phialophora fastigiata; Streptomyces albidoflavus;

    Sammanfattning : Microorganisms are able to produce a wide variety of volatile organic compounds. This thesis deals with sampling, analysis and identification of such compounds, produced by microorganisms commonly found in buildings. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Development of molecular techniques for fungal diagnostic research

    Författare :Qing-Yin Zeng; Åsa Rasmuson-Lestander; Xiao-Ru Wang; Aino Nevalainen; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular biology; Fungi; DNA markers; Aerosols; Detection and quantification; Environmental monitoring; Molekylärbiologi; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Sammanfattning : Fungi are present everywhere in indoor and outdoor environments. Many fungi are toxigenic or pathogenic that may cause various public health concerns. Rapid detection, quantification and characterization of fungi in living and working environments are essential for exposure risk assessment to safe guard public health. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Biological growth on rendered façades

    Författare :Sanne Johansson; Avdelningen för Byggnadsmaterial; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; temperature; render; radiation; photosynthesis; moulds; mosses; mortar; moisture; lichens; Imaging-PAM; humidity; heat capacity; heat; ETICS; algae; biological growth; calorimetry; desiccation tolerance;

    Sammanfattning : Biological organisms have an incredible ability to adapt to almost any environment and the humans activities on earth have created many new habitats for different kinds of organisms. For example can certain organisms grow on rocks and vertical cliffs, and when humans started building houses with mineral based façades, some organisms found that these were new habitats to live on. 4. 4. Dieback of Fraxinus excelsior in the Baltic Sea Region : associated fungi, their pathogenicity and implications for silviculture

    Författare :Remigijus Bakys; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Nyckelord :LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis is comprised of three main studies: (1) the wood-inhabiting fungi found in declining European ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) and their pathogenicity; (2) the relationship between F. excelsior phenology, site density and the susceptibility to the dieback; and (3) the potential of natural regeneration of dieback affected ash stands. 5. 5. Microbially mediated manganese oxides enriched in yttrium and rare earth elements in the Ytterby mine, Sweden

    Författare :Susanne Sjöberg; Christophe Dupraz; Per Persson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; manganese oxidizers; birnessite; yttrium and rare earth elements YREE ; biofilms; shallow subsurface; Ytterby mine; geomicrobiology; microbial geochemistry; manganoxiderare; birnessit; yttrium och sällsynta jordartsmetaller YREE ; underjordisk; Ytterby mine; geomikrobiologi; mikrobiell kemi; geokemi; Geochemistry;

    Sammanfattning : Microorganisms are able to manipulate redox reactions and thus exert extensive control on chemical speciation and element partitioning in nature, affecting the formation and dissolution of certain minerals. One of these redox active elements is manganese (Mn), which in its oxidized states (III/IV), commonly forms Mn oxide-hydroxide minerals. LÄS MER
