6. Linear models for multiscale materials simulations : Towards a seamless linking of electronic and atomistic models for complex metal oxides
Sammanfattning : Multiscale modelling approaches, connecting data from electronic structure calculations all the way towards engineering continuum models, have become an important ingredient in modern materials science. Materials modelling in a broader sense is already amply used to address complex chemical problems in academic science, but also in many industrial sectors. LÄS MER
7. Surface modification of inorganic materials with graphene oxide : From solution to high-temperature synthesis
Sammanfattning : The use of graphene as an additive in materials is often challenging due to the agglomeration of the two-dimensional graphene sheets. An alternative additive is graphene oxide (GO), an oxidized form of graphene, which is easily dispersed in water. LÄS MER
8. Oxygen Vacancy Chemistry in Ceria
Sammanfattning : Cerium(IV) oxide (CeO2), ceria, is an active metal oxide used in solid oxide fuel cells and for the purification of exhaust gases in vehicle emissions control. Behind these technically important applications of ceria lies one overriding feature, namely ceria's exceptional reduction-oxidation properties. LÄS MER
9. Carbothermal synthesis of nano-structured metal, carbides and nitrides, using solution processed precursors; from precursor to product
Sammanfattning : This thesis describes how solution chemical based carbothermal syntheses can be used for the synthesis of nanostructured zirconium carbide and nitride nanophase powders as well as a nickel-metal coating on NbC for use as a sintering agent. The focus is on the development of novel synthesis routes using atomic or small nanoscale level mixing of the metal oxide and carbon source in the starting precursors, enabling the use of lower synthesis temperatures and non-agglomerated nanosized powders. 10. Structural Studies of Mn-X (X=Al, Bi): Permanent Magnetic Materials without Rare Earth Metals
Sammanfattning : How to generate and use electricity in a more efficient way is a major challenge for humankind. In this context, permanent magnets play an important role within a very broad range of electric power applications. The strongest magnets used today are mainly based on alloys that contain rare-earth metals, which are neither economical nor sustainable. LÄS MER
