1. Degradation of organic matter in wastewater -Enhanced denitrification and removal of refractory organics
Sammanfattning : Degradation of organic matter takes place in many processes within a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The need for optimisations and extended degradation processes for both organics and nitrogen will increase as outlet demands are strengthened and increasing loads are desired. LÄS MER
2. Carbon utilisation for extended nitrogen removal and resource savings
Sammanfattning : A full-scale in-line primary sludge hydrolysis experiment was conducted in one out of four primary settlers at the Klagshamn Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) to test if the wastewater quality can be improved in terms of providing easily accessible carbon for possible pre-denitrification and the reduction of external carbon sources. The amount of easily accessible carbon produced, in the form of the volatile fatty acid (VFA), alkalinity and ammonium concentrations, was measured throughout the entire full-scale experiment at the outlet of the hydrolysis tank and that of the ordinary primary settler, which served as a reference line. 3. Use of chemical denitrification for nitrogen removal from landfill leachates
Sammanfattning : Landfill leachate usually has a high concentration ofammonium nitrogen and heavy metals, but too low alkalinitycontent for full biological nitrification, as well as a too lowconcentration of biologically degradable organic carbon forbiological denitrification, and at the same time very variablecomposition (quantity and quality) with time. These factorsresult in serious problems for treating leachate with existingsystems. LÄS MER
4. Recovery of organic carbon from municipal waste streams
Sammanfattning : The focus of the current study was on the recovery of carbon from municipal bio-waste streams. Firstly, the relationship between methanogenic pathways and the properties of anaerobic granules was studied using two pilot-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors with different granule size distribution. 5. Character and Function of Anammox Bacteria under Environmental Stress
Sammanfattning : During the last few decades observations of novel processes involved in nitrogen transformations have fundamentally challenged the view of pathways and controlling mechanisms during local and global nitrogen cycling. Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) constitutes one of these new pathways where autotrophic bacteria oxidize ammonium by nitrite to dinitrogen gas under anaerobic conditions. LÄS MER
