1. Experimental cardiopulmonary cerebral resuscitation : A study of cerebral perfusion with special reference to the postresuscitation disturbances
Sammanfattning : Ischemic neuronal injury continues to be a major delimiting factor in achieving successful clinical outcomesafter resuscitation from cardiac arrest. In this thesis, a pig model of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) wasused to address the effects of different interventions on cerebral blood flow and oxygenation during CPR and theinitial postresuscitation period. 2. Cerebral Perfusion and Metabolism during Experimental Extracorporeal Circulation
Sammanfattning : Neurologic injuries are major causes of mortality and morbidity after cardiac surgery. This thesis aimed to investigate cerebral metabolism and perfusion abnormalities in pigs during hypothermic circulatory arrest, selective antegrade cerebral perfusion (SACP) and extracorporeal circulation following progressive venous stasis. 3. Cerebral CT - and MRI perfusion: Techniques and clinical application in iNPH
Sammanfattning : Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is a disorder of the elderly, defined by slowly progressive impairment of gait and balance, cognitive decline, and incontinence. Disturbance of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics results in ventriculomegaly without intracranial pressure increase. LÄS MER
4. Thoracic Aortic Surgery : Epidemiology, Outcomes, and Prevention of Cerebral Complications
Sammanfattning : The mortality of thoracic aortic diseases (mainly aneurysms and dissections) is high, even with surgical treatment. Epidemiology and long-term outcomes are incompletely investigated. Stroke is a major complication contributing to mortality, morbidity, and possibly to reduced quality of life. LÄS MER
5. Optimisation and Validation of Dynamic Susceptibility Contrast MRI Perfusion Measurements
Sammanfattning : The studies presented in this thesis concern the optimisation and evaluation of the dynamic susceptibility contrast magnetic resonance imaging (DSC-MRI) technique for the assessment of perfusion-related parameters of the brain, such as cerebral blood flow (CBF), cerebral blood volume (CBV) and mean transit time (MTT). Several methodological factors influence these measurements, for example, contrast-agent administration, arterial input function (AIF) registration, choice of deconvolution algorithm and the choice of pulse-sequence parameters.
