1. In vitro Studies of Genodermatoses Affecting Cytoskeletal Integrity and Lipid Processing in Human Epidermis : Pathogenic Mechanisms and Effects of Retinoid Therapy
Sammanfattning : Autosomal dominant epidermolytic ichthyosis (EI) is a rare disease characterized by intra-epidermal blistering due to mutations in either of two keratin genes, KRT1 and KRT10, expressed by suprabasal keratinocytes. Autosomal recessive congenital ichthyosis (ARCI) is a non-blistering, hyperkeratotic disease caused by mutations in one of the following genes: ABCA12, ALOX12B, ALOXE3, TGM1, CYP4F22, NIPAL4 and SLC27A4, which are all essential for skin barrier homeostasis. 2. Characterisation of human adipose tissue : ceramide metabolism, depot differences and evaluation of dysfunctionality
Sammanfattning : Normal adipose tissue function is necessary for maintaining proper energy balance, as both excess and absence of this tissue lead to metabolic disturbances, such as insulin resistance. Adipose tissue can be dysfunctional in many ways, including disturbances in adipocyte size, lipolysis rate, adipokine secretion, inflammation, fibrosis or oxidative stress. LÄS MER
3. Lipid bilayers versus monolayers- Sponge phases and skin lipid domains
Sammanfattning : The L3, or sponge, phase is a thermodynamically stable isotropic liquid consisting of a surfactant membrane in aqueous solution. A solvent induced L3 phase is shown in systems of solvent, monoolein and water. LÄS MER
4. Mechanisms for and consequences of cellular lipid accumulation - Role of the Very Low Density Lipoprotein (VLDL) receptor
Sammanfattning : Lipid accumulation in non adipose tissue is associated with various cases of tissue dysfunction and tissue failure. Reduced availability of oxygen is known to cause intracellular lipid accumulation in cardiomyocytes as well as in hearts. LÄS MER
5. Computational modeling of biological barriers
Sammanfattning : One of the most important aspects for all life on this planet is the act to keep their biological processes in a state where they do not reach equilibrium. One part in the upholding of this imbalanced state is the barrier between the cells and their surroundings, created by the cell membrane. LÄS MER
