1. Pancreatic extracellular communication. Applications to beta cell cultures and islet amyloid polypeptide aggregation
Sammanfattning : Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a disease with epidemic proportions due to increased incidences worldwide, persistence of undiagnosed cases, uncontrolled forms of the disease, association with cardiovascular complications, and lack of definitive treatment options. In particular, type 2 DM (T2DM) is placing an enormous financial burden on worldwide healthcare systems that will increase in the futureThere is a need to develop physiological assay platforms that provide functionally relevant models of diabetes in order to accelerate the discovery of new treatments. 2. Exploring Cellular Dynamics : From Vesicle Tethering to Cell Migration
Sammanfattning : Cells in the body communicate with each other in order to cooperate efficiently. This communication is in part achieved by regulated secretion of signaling molecules, which when released from a cell may activate receptors present at the plasma membrane of an adjacent cell. Such signals affect both cell fate and behavior. LÄS MER
3. New Approaches for Chemical Analysis of Single Cells and Vesicles
Sammanfattning : Exocytosis is the major cell-to-cell communication process in the nervous system, involving the conversion of an electrical signal (e.g. action potential) to a chemical one. Signaling molecules like neurotransmitters, hormones and/or peptides are stored in vesicles inside the cell. LÄS MER
4. From single-molecule sensing to extracellular vesicles in glioma cells under stress
Sammanfattning : This thesis describes the work I conducted in two different areas, namely biomolecular sensing and quantitative cell biology. The work in the former area was focused on the optimization of plasmonic metamaterials for sensing applications, and in the latter on the characterization of extracellular vesicles released by glioblastoma cells under stress conditions. 5. Active cellular forces in variable mechanical microenvironments
Sammanfattning : Our bodies are immensely complex structures, with various systems, organs, and processes that are not only biochemically driven, but strongly dependent on physical mechanics. At the heart of all these processes are cells, which must generate forces to adhere, spread, differentiate, grow, and move. LÄS MER
