1. Glucose- and hypoxia-regulated insulin gene expression
Sammanfattning : Although extensively studied, there are still many unanswered questions regarding the exact regulation of insulin gene expression. This is important to further investigate since it will hopefully help us understand the pathophysiology of some types of diabetes. LÄS MER
2. TGF-beta signaling in cancer
Sammanfattning : Transforming Growth Factor Beta (TGF-β) is a cytokine regulating a wide range of cellular processes such as proliferation, differentiation, and migration. At the early stages of cancer development TGF-β functions as a tumor suppressor, mainly due to its inhibitory effect on cellular growth, but during cancer progression, mutations in TGF-β signal components switches TGF-β into a promoter of cancer cell proliferation, survival and metastasis. 3. The role of transforming growth factor‐β signaling and hypoxia‐inducible factors in renal cell carcinoma
Sammanfattning : Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the cancer of the kidneys; about 1100 patients with RCC are diagnosed in Sweden each year. RCC can be classified into several subtypes, clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is most common accounting to about 70% of all RCCs, and also the most lethal; papillary renal cell carcinoma (pRCC) accounts to about 10%‐15%, while chromophobe renal cell carcinoma (chRCC) accounts to about 5% of all RCCs. 4. Hypoxia, PDGF and VEGF in Vascular Development
Sammanfattning : The mechanisms behind many important aspects of blood- and lymphatic vessel formation have yet not been elucidated in detail. The primary objectives of this thesis have therefore been to study the effects of hypoxia, platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGFs) on vascular development and function. 5. Development and application of a patient-derived xenograft platform to test anticancer agents
Sammanfattning : Malignant melanoma is the most aggressive form of skin cancer and incidence rates are on the rise. Despite recent improvements in treatment options, the disease still remains lethal. Which calls for expedited solutions. LÄS MER
