1. Using Pharmacokinetic and Pharmacodynamic Principles to Evaluate Individualisation of Antibiotic Dosing – Emphasis on Cefuroxime
Sammanfattning : Cefuroxime is a renally eliminated antibiotic used against a variety of different bacterial infections. The pharmacokinetics (PK) for cefuroxime was studied in 97 hospitalized patients using population analysis. To be able to measure cefuroxime in human serum a new sensitive analytical method was developed using mass spectrometry detection. LÄS MER
2. Serum Amyloid A Protein (SAA) in Healthy and Infected Individuals
Sammanfattning : Serum amyloid A protein (SAA) is an acute phase protein that has recently gained increasing interest as a potential marker for disease and treatment monitoring. We investigated SAA and CRP levels in (a) patients with various common infectious diseases (n=98), (b) patients with pyelonephritis (n=37) versus patients with cystitis (n=32), (c) healthy individuals of varying ages (n=231), (d) very immature newborn infants with or without nosocomial infections (NIs) (n=72) and (e) patients with bacterial infections treated with cefuroxime (n=81). 3. Pharmacometrics to characterize innate immune response and antibacterial treatments
Sammanfattning : The immune system protects the host against pathogens by distinguishing self from non-self. However, it is most-often disregarded in pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic (PKPD) characterization of (new and old) antibiotics. LÄS MER
4. Posterior capsule opacification and postoperative endophthalmitis following cataract surgery : predictive and protective factors
Sammanfattning : Modem cataract surgery with implantation of an intraocular lens (IOL) is an increasingly safe and successful procedure, though complications still occur. This thesis addresses the most common complication, posterior capsule opacification (PCO) and the rare but serious complication postoperative endophthalmitis (POE). LÄS MER
5. Antibiotic resistance in Gram-negative bacilli : with focus on cephalosporin resistance mechanisms in Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae
Sammanfattning : Objectives: The objectives of this thesis were to study mechanisms conferring cefuroxime resistance in clinical non-ESBL (extended-spectrum beta-lactamase) producing isolates of Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae, as well as the presence of co-resistance to other antibiotics in the K. pneumoniae isolates.
