  1. 1. Role of cadmium and ultraviolet-B radiation in plants, Influence on photosynthesis and element content in two species of Brassicaceae

    Författare :Helene Larsson Jönsson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Växtekologi; Plant ecology; UV-B; plant nutrients; photosynthesis; oxygen evolution; chlorophyll fluorescence; Cd uptake; cadmium; Arabidopsis thaliana; Brassica napus; Plant biochemistry; Växtbiokemi; Botany; Botanik;

    Sammanfattning : Plants are exposed to many different stress factors during their lifetime, often more than one factor at a time, which highlights the importance of research regarding interaction among stress factors. Cadmium and ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B, 280-315 nm) are two potential stress factors in the environment, which have gained increased interest due to atmospheric pollution. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Metal accumulation by plants : evaluation of the use of plants in stormwater treatment

    Författare :Åsa Fritioff; Maria Greger; Lena Kautsky; Bert Wolterbeek; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Elodea canadensis; Potamogeton natans; uptake; translocation; distribution; toxicity; salinity; temperature; and leakage; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Metal contaminated stormwater, i.e. surface runoff in urban areas, can be treated in percolation systems, ponds, or wetlands to prevent the release of metals into receiving waters. Plants in such systems can, for example, attenuate water flow, bind sediment, and directly accumulate metals. LÄS MER

    Sammanfattning : This thesis describes two different sample preparation strategies for inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), and their ability regarding multi element quantification in complex samples. Sensitivity, repeatability, reproducibility and accuracy were investigated. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Role of plants in treating metal-polluted waters in wetlands

    Författare :Johanna Nyquist; Maria Greger; Hans Brix; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; treatment wetlands; stormwater; AMD; metal uptake; wetland plants; Biology; Biologi; växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology;

    Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this thesis was to evaluate the role of wetland plants in wetland treatment of metal-polluted waters. The specific aims were to investigate metal uptake in various wetland plant species; whether and how wetland plants tolerate high metal concentrations in their immediate surroundings, and how the pH and metal concentrations of polluted waters influence metal uptake in wetland plants were also investigated. Sammanfattning : Groundwater, wastewater, surface runoff and surface water samples from Lake Victoria basin, Uganda was assessed for trace metals contamination. Untreated, base-treated and peroxide-treated biosorbents from Albizia coriaria, Coffea canephora, Cyperus papyrus, Erythrina abyssinica and Musa spp were investigated for removal of selected trace metals from contaminated water in batch studies.
