  1. 11. Structure Function Relationships in Pyrimidine Degrading and Biocatalytic Enzymes, and Their Implications for Cancer Therapy and Green Chemistry

    Författare :Dirk Maurer; Doreen Dobritzsch; Mikael Widersten; Rikkert Wierenga; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; β-Ureidopropionase; Dihydropyrimidine Dehydrogenase; Alcohol Dehydrogenase; Pyrimidine catabolism; 5-Fluorouracil; CASTing; X-ray Crystallography;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis includes the work of two separate projects, studies on pyrimidine degrading enzymes and studies on in vitro evolved enzymes. The common denominator of both projects was the use of structural information to explain functional effects, observed in the studied biocatalysts. LÄS MER

  2. 12. Metabolic Engineering of Disaccharide Catabolism for Polysaccharide Formation in Lactococcus lactis and Streptococcus thermophilus

    Författare :Fredrik Levander; Institutionen för immunteknologi; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Kemiteknik och kemisk teknologi; Chemical technology and engineering; metabolic engineering; exopolysaccharide; polysaccharide; disaccharide; Streptococcus thermophilus; lactic acid bacteria; Lactococcus lactis; Biochemical technology; Biokemisk teknik; Microbiology; bacteriology; virology; mycology; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; virologi; mykologi;

    Sammanfattning : Exopolysaccharides (EPSs) produced by the lactic acid bacteria (LAB) Lactococcus lactis and Streptococcus thermophilus are important for the rheological behaviour and texture of a variety of fermented food products. Furthermore, EPSs from food-grade LAB have potential as food additives and functional food ingredients with both health and economic benefits. LÄS MER

  3. 13. The GH/IGF-1 system during surgery and catabolism : focus on metabolism and heart function

    Författare :Mats Wallin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : GH plays a role in both anabolism and catabolism. The anabolic properties of GH are mediated by circulating (endocrine) and locally secreted (paracrine) IGF-1. It is thus the IGF-1 response after increased GH secretion that determines whether metabolism will be anabolic or catabolic. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Mapping Phenolics Metabolism and Metabolic Engineering of Saccharomyces cerevisiae for Increased Endogenous Catabolism of Phenolic Compounds

    Författare :Peter Adeboye; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; toxicity; Keywords: Phenolic compounds; Saccharomyces cerevisiae; conversion; inhibitor;

    Sammanfattning : AbstractSustainable, biotechnological utilization of non-food, plant biomass has been demonstrated to be a viable means of producing energy, fuels, materials and chemicals, representing a paradigm shift from fossil-derived sources. However, the presence of chemicals that inhibit fermentation by microorganisms such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae, commonly used for bioconversion, causes a bottleneck in such processes. LÄS MER

  5. 15. Erythrocyte amino acids in health and renal failure and their association to the IGF-I/IGFBP-1 axis

    Författare :José Carolino Divino Filho; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :amino acid; ASP DNA; catabolism dialysis; erythrocytes; glutamate; glutamine; health; human; IGF-I; IGFBP-1; muscle; plasmaprotein intake; rat; renal failure; uraemia;

    Sammanfattning : Abnormalities in amino acids (AA) metabolism in uraemia have mainly been reported to occur in plasma and muscle. No investigation has been undertaken to evaluate the AA levels in plasma, muscle and red blood cells (RBC) simultaneously, although the RBC pool of free AA constitutes a large proportion of the free AA in blood, and RBC are involved in the interorgan transport of AA.
