  1. 21. Dysregulation of the kynurenine pathway in psychotic disorders : immunological aspects

    Författare :Magdalena Kegel; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Kynurenic acid (KYNA), a metabolite of the kynurenine pathway, is emerging as a key factor in the development of psychotic disorders. Increased levels of KYNA are found in the brain and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and are associated to psychotic symptoms. LÄS MER

  2. 22. Cytokine-induced beta-cell apoptosis and its regulation by SOCS-1 and imidazoline compounds

    Författare :Irina Zaitseva; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : A selective destruction of pancreatic β-cells as a consequence of inflammation in the islets of Langerhans is a feature of type 1 diabetes. Pro-inflammatory cytokines secreted by T lymphocytes and macrophages infiltrating the pancreatic islets participate in the development of this autoimmune disease by acting directly on the β-cell. 3. 23. Preservation of male fertility in childhood acute leukemia : an experimental study addressing novel strategies and putative risks

    Författare :Mi Hou; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Although treatment of cancer in young boys with cytotoxic agents has long been known to cause infertility in the survivors, the mechanisms underlying drug-induced damage to the immature testis remain unclear. A number of clinical issues associated with transplantation of testicular germ cells or tissues also require clarification. LÄS MER

  4. 24. Apoptosis in myelodysplastic syndromes : effects of hemopoietic growth factors

    Författare :Ramin Tehranchi; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Increased apoptosis of hernatopoietic progenitors is a hallmark of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and results in ineffective hematopoiesis. Erythroid apoptosis is thought to be the main mechanism underlying the severe anemia observed in the low-risk subgroups, refractory anemia (RA) arid RA with ringed sideroblasts (RARS). LÄS MER
