1. Biochemical studies of carbohydrate blood group antigens - Carbohydrate phenotype in relation to cellular glycosyltranferases
Sammanfattning : The possibility to alter the cell surface carbohydrate expression by insertion or deletion of glycosyltransferase genes is a powerful technique to study the biological function of selected carbohydrate antigens. However, shifting the equilibrium between competing glycosyltransferases might lead to unexpected phenotypic effects, such as accumulation of other carbohydrate antigens and exposure of antigen structures that normally are cryptic or present in minute amounts on the cell surface. 2. Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Biomimetic Carbohydrate Materials
Sammanfattning : The present thesis honors contemporary molecular dynamics simulation methodologies which provide powerful means to predict data, interpret observations and widen our understanding of the dynamics, structures and interactions of carbohydrate systems. With this as starting point my thesis work embarked on several cutting edge problems summarized as follows. LÄS MER
3. Deciphering Carbohydrate Structure : From NMR Chemical Shifts to Conformational Analysis
Sammanfattning : Carbohydrates are ubiquitous in nature and exhibit a multitude of roles. Besides nucleic and amino acids, they can be regarded as the third alphabet of life. They are used as energy source to fuel the cells, as structural building blocks and play a key role in cellular recognition processes. LÄS MER
4. Studies of Carbohydrate-Binding Proteins from Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli
Sammanfattning : Knowledge about the carbohydrate binding specificity of pathogens can give an increased understanding of their virulence strategies, and is also of importance for the development of anti-adhesive therapies and vaccines. Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) is a well-known causative agent of diarrheal disease. LÄS MER
5. Structural analyses of carbohydrate receptors for enterotoxins and adhesins of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli
Sammanfattning : Carbohydrate-binding proteins expressed by microbes are key determinants in initiating and sustaining infections that account for millions of deaths each year. This thesis fo- cused on proteins integral to infections instigated by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC); estimated as the largest bacterial cause of diarrhea in the world with hundreds of millions of cases each year.
